We had the good fortune of connecting with Marylou Garcia-Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marylou, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born and raised in Southern California where my upbringing largely impacted who I am today. I was constantly surrounded by artists/musicians. Everyone in my family is a creative in some form. So I gravitated towards art and I spent a lot of time working out and trying different mediums. Essentially obsessing over each new craft/skill. And I’m still that way. I get very excited to learn a new thing and be able to create something from that.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Growing up I was surrounded by Artists/Musicians. I have vivid memories of being a child and falling asleep during a family party where rock n roll was blasting as my Dad and his brothers covered Hotel California or Bell Bottom Blues. Needless to say, my interests have always lied in art. I ended up going to college for filmmaking. Which was actually a compromise to my mom, because she really wanted me to have a Bachelors degree and I just wanted to make movies. And now I do have a Bachelors degree! So shout out to my mom. Later on I eventually got into woodworking and started making YouTube videos on the things I was making. And as I was making videos I found that I was able to combine a lot of my previous skills and passions. Was any of that easy? No, it wasn’t. There were a lot of times I struggled or felt doubt about what I was doing. I’ve made a lot of mistakes. Eventually, I came to the realization that that might be the key. I needed to struggle and make mistakes so that I could learn from them and apply that knowledge to the next project or task. It really taught me how to persevere and how to get better. I’m proud of continuing to follow my passions so that I can keep telling my story.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, you can’t come to Southern California without hitting up Disneyland, so that in itself is a day. Then I would also take you to Universal Studios because who doesn’t love Hogwarts? I would also want to hike the Hollywood Sign from Griffith Observatory, eating at my favorite brunch spot after at Blu Jam Cafe. We should go to the Grove and have lunch at one of the places in the Farmer’s Market. Then we can San Diego for a couple days to explore. Some of my favorite things are Balboa Park, La Jolla Tide Pools, Torrey Pines, Little Italy and North Park. There are so many other options so I will leave it to my best friend to decide what else they’d like to do.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out my family because they play a huge part in my story and shaping out who I came to be.
