We had the good fortune of connecting with Aaron Lopez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aaron, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work life balance has changed dramatically throughout the years for all of us. All four of us have families and a full time job that we attend to throughout the week. I actually am an online student at Arizona State University where I am majoring in Film and somehow find time to make music in-between school, work, and being a father of two little girls (6 & 8 yrs old). Work life balance for me is just a matter of planning what I have to get done week to week since each week is different. With our newest release “Your Bones” I was able to write a skeleton of a song with a melody and send it via email to Jacob (guitar) and Anthony (Drums) to add their flavor to it. This song was completely recorded at each-other’s homes separately. This was also the first song that I played no instruments on and only focused on my vocals that I ended up recording with the reliable local recording engineer Cory Spotts.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Bid For Escape is a band that writes music about real life situations, stories, and emotional truth. The band wants to spread love through connection in music and at the same time reach out to those who struggle with mental and emotional issues. BFE wants to share stories of pain, love, and societal issues through music in hopes to be one with each listener and therefor have a meaningful connection with everyone who they come across at shows. We are an independent band that self manages all business transactions in recording, funding, and booking. Bid For Escape is: Aaron Lopez – (Vocals, Guitar, Founder) Anthony Lee – (Drummer, Engineer) Jacob Ramirez – (Guitarist, Producer) Jake Moses – (Bassist)
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We love to hang out at home with our families. Anthony and I have recently got into making fancy cocktails in the comfort of our own homes. When we do get to go out we like going to places that can make really good drinks like Pigtails, Malinda’s Alley, or Valley Bar. When it comes to coffee, we are addicted to DriftWood Coffee in Downtown Peoria (our home city). Rummer says they will soon be opening up a spot within Rebel Lounge, a music venue where we had a sold out EP Release show. Rebel Lounge is a highly recommended venue to see local music as well as touring artist, I would recommend Rebel to anyone visiting the valley of the sun.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Cory Spots, for the vocal recordings and coaching throughout the recording. Robert Venable for the Mastering of the song “Your Bones” and the continuous connection since the recording of our first self-titled record from 2008 when we were “Downcast Fable”. Robert is now a big name in the music industry as he has recorded grammy wining artist and is currently now the sound engineer for “The Kelly Clarkson Show”. Anthony Lee (Our Drummer) for mixing the latest release “Your Bones” and also most of our previous EP “Can’t Make You Love”. Anthony is a very underrated engineer as he also mixes sound for the largest church in the valley, CCV. He not only controls all of our set list at each show but also has recorded and mixed the new song effortlessly and I constantly get asked “where did you go to record this?!” because of how good it sounds. Jacob Ramirez (Our Guitarist) for producing the song and recording all the guitar parts. This guys is no joke, he just literally is a walking underrated 5 star rock music producer. He makes all our songs go from good to great and still keeps our sound without loosing that Bid For Escape sound. His tones on the guitar are phenomenal. He also assisted Jake (Our Bass Player) in finding the right sound and production on the bass lines for “Your Bones”. Carlos Herrera for recording the music video and helping me direct the video and make my idea come to life. This guy is the nicest and most creative film editor I have ever come across. He assisted me in filming the acoustic “Axiom Venue Sessions” and from there I knew we had to continue to film and create something greater each time. “Your Bones” came out perfect as I planned and Carlos assisted me in keeping the imagery I wanted in the video. The video was picked up by VEVO and has more plays now than videos we released years ago and it all started with Carlos. Finally I have to give a shout out to Micah Bentley of Axiom Church / Wild Earth music, for letting us use the space at Axiom to make our music video. Micah is not only a friend but someone I look up to as a musician and leader in my church as I attend and play guitar, drums, and sing for Axiom Worship.
