We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Yates and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
This was always a passion project. My entire childhood there were two constants my love of Art and a fascination with exotic wildlife. When I first started out I just wanted cool pets but eventually realized I could create living art the animals being my canvas and the various pattern and color mutations being my medium. Since then I’ve continued with that evolution except instead of treating it like a hobby I now run it like a buisness and buisness is good!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always been a believer in an honest dollar over a quick buck. It’s about the long game and taking care of people/doing the right thing is both the ethical thing to do as well as what gets you ahead through repeat clientele and referrals. This approach has been crucial for my success both socially as well as the projects I’m currently working on are a direct result of the work I did 3-5 years ago. They say patience is a virtue I say patience is “the Virtue” well that and a little artistic vision 😉
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a lover of being outdoor and one of my “go to” spots to take visitors is CamelBack that is a fun relatively short (yet intense) hike that puts you in the middle of the valley, gives a great view and allows you to take it all in. I also love Baseball so it seems pretty reasonable to take in a Diamonbacks game and swing over to the Yard to get some of those calories back we burned up on Camelback.
Me being on the south Side of town I typically go to a watering hole in my neck of the woods. Good Time Charlie’s is a nice local spot with live music, cold drinks and a friendly crowd. That being said Arizona has so many fantastic places to take someone from out of town I would definitely try and slide out of town for a few days. My #1 spot when entertaining out of town guest is Sedona man that place is Amazing. I also like making a day trip down to Saguaro national park for that south west experence.
So many great places to go all across the valley but some of the best times are had just having a drink in the back yard or floating in the pool. It’s not ALWAYS about the place but the company🍻
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are many people I can attribute my success far too many to name but I’d like to start with the Art teachers that saw potential in a kid from the wrong side of the tracks. Encouraging and giving positive reinforcement helped me develop into the person I am today. I know this isn’t necessarily common medium some wouldn’t even consider it art but in my opinion it’s all about perspective. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder…
