We had the good fortune of connecting with Melanie Span and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melanie, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success and the success of my brand is my tenacity and my drive to learn as much as I can in order to enhance my craft. Having the mental strength to resist opposition and overcome hurdles that have come throughout my life has helped me get to the point where I am now. I remind myself that it is not an obstacle but an opportunity for growth, for learning, for developing, strengthening and applying knowledge. I remember that before I can teach I must first master being a student, which I have done, and I have been able to hone in on my profession and expand a brand that is worthy of being viewed as something more than your standard natural hair stylist. With over 15 years experience in this business, I have grown to learn that you are providing others with more than just a hair service. You are providing them with quality experiences that lead to memorable moments.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Faith and hard work and more faith. It wasn’t easy. There were a lot of obstacles that were thrown my way from the passing of my father to my health issues that literally put a stop to everything that I was trying to achieve at that time. Overcoming these challenges wasn’t a small feat. But faith is what brought me from my darkest and lowest places and remembering a dream that I had as a young girl. I wanted to make my daddy proud. So I got back to work as soon as I possibly could after I was sick and finished school in order to get my cosmetology degree. A lesson learned in this is that even though your own personal world may have stopped, the world outside keeps going, people keep living and growing. You must focus on self and your personal goals. At times you may be the only person you have and you have to always be your own biggest cheerleader. One thing I want the world to know about me is that throughout anything, my goal is to always persevere. This type of dedication is the reason why my brand will continue to grow and succeed.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to Mount Lemmon. The views are simply amazing and there is never a bad time to go. Anytime is the best time! Lakeside park would be another place I would take my friends. This was the park that my dad first brought my brother and I too when we moved to Tucson. I love to walk around and clear my head here. It is a very peaceful place. I would need to take my friends downtown to 4th avenue and eat at Ermanos. In my opinion, this spot has the best eats and drinks in town.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The person I would give a shoutout to would be my dad. He is the one that actually came up with my business name when I was 9 years old. He is also the one who taught me how to do hair. I also want to give a shoutout to the movie B.A.P.S.! This movie showed me at a young age that you could turn something as simple as doing hair into a business and this for me as a young kid brought forth an explosion of ideas and I knew then that I wanted to do exactly what I do now. Lastly, I want to shout out the Braiders Only Network. This is a community of over 500 women around the world who are likeminded business individuals who all help one another with different endeavors in this profession.
