We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Gaspard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
In order to succeed at anything in life, you must have good habits. You must learn to develop strong rountines that allow you to build upon an even stronger foundation. I start my mornings exactly the same way and I have for years. These habits have taught me discpline and how to extract the most out of my days. Something as simple as meal prepping and eating the same breakfast daily has allowed me to take an even deeper ownership of my mornings. It’s one less decision I need to make and one more I can free up for bigger things in my life. There is an element of calm and peacefulness that I’m highly attracted to each morning that puts me in a great headspace. We have little control over what comes at us on a daily basis, but we have 100% control over how we react to those issues. I wholeheartedly believe how you embrace your moring will dictate a huge part of how the rest of your day will unravel. My heart aches for those that hit the snooze button 10x, drag themselves to the coffee pot, and continue to feel behind or being chased throughout their days. I firmly believe having a solid handle on your mornings will allow you to live a better life overall. I rise early, I mediatate, I stretch, I implement skin care (thanks to my daughter, Elle), I drink cold water with a scoop of collagen, I pray, I journal, I eat the same breakfast daily (veggie eggwhite scramble, wheat THINS bread, one teaspoon of natural peanut butter), I read my current personal development book, I drink a plant-based energy supplement, I hit the play button on my workout, I take a warm bath — I am then ready to face my day with good, clean, healthy energy and an endorphin high that brings my ‘to-do list crushing’ to an Olympic-level sport. Once you start owning your mornings, you will start owning your life.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The name of my health and wellness company is called: Be Healthy|Be Fit|Be Happy. I believe in order to be fully happy you must be healthy and fit. Our world is inflicted with so many illnesses and diseases, but sadly, most of them are self-inflicted and caused by repeated offenses of poor food and beverage choices and lack of bodily movements. I have been naturally fit most all of my life, but growing up in New Orleans food was always the way to your heart. The more butter and salt, the more you were able to shower others with love. We usually fry anything that moved and it simply tasted better than grilled items. Thankfully, I also grew up very active. I played all major sports and some of which carried into my adulthood. I spent a great amount of my time pounding the pavement as I crushed 8 full marathons, a handful of 1/2 marathons, and way too many to count 5 and 10k races. I started to fall in love with triathlons and trained quite hard for a 1/2 Ironman in Tempe, Arizona. I also summited 7 mountains within the City of Phoenix in one day. However, a few years ago my body started to experience an early onset of menopause and the sugar cravings that came with it destroyed my body. I decided I needed to stay as active as possible, but my nutrition was poor and basically non-existent. I found a badass coach off of Instagram and the rest is history. Lori Miggins changed my life. She taught me the meaning of functional fitness and how and why I needed to incorporate portion-controlled meals into my daily life. Within 21 days my body had such a beautiful transformation. However, it wasn’t just my physical transformation that changed my life — it was also a mental and spiritual one, too. I fell madly in love with health and wellness as a whole and I never looked back. I had a lot of friends and family reach out to me to inquite about my changes and in a blink my company was formed. I am proud to say that a lot of my clients were once strangers that found me via my social media platforms and have turned into special friends. Social media is a powerful tool and it has allowed me to help women and men all over the US and Canada and now France with their health journeys. When you combine passion with displicine, magic can happen. My brand has success because it was organcially formed. I received some major help in my life and I wanted to pay it forward. I lead my company with my heart and most days I have to drag myself away and set boundaries. My passion for helping others obtain greater health keeps my up late at night and causes me to jump out of bed in the mornings. Not many careers do that for people, so when you can create something that powerful, you just want to keep doing more and more. Build a brand around your passion and you will never stop falling in love with your career.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Phoenix, Arizona is a beautiful place to visit. I have lived here for over 25 years and I am still discovering pockets of awesomeoness. I would first recommend a visit to our art museums. Luckily, my husband is an international architect and has created some beautiful pieces of architecture in our very backyard. There is a precious neighborhood coffeehouse called Luci’s and they have the best iced cold brews with splashes of your favorite milks (we happen to love oat milk the best). We would certainly nibble on organic salads at Flower Child on Central Avenue for lunch one day. My charming son, Grayson, works for a fun pizza and wine restuarant, Sauce, so grabbing a thin-crust pizza would be a fun dinner choice as well. There’s no way we would skip some amazing hikes and fresh air just 90 miles or so north of our home. Sedona is a wickedly gorgoreous city with too many fantantic hikes to count. However, Devil’s Bridge would be one and Beaver Creek would be the other. We love jumping in the car and just being adventureous. Life is too short to stay home and watch Netflix. Depending on the time of the year, we would take in a home game. Arizona is also the home to all four major sports teams. We love cheering for our local teams, especially those Arizona Cardinals. We are also quite blessed with beautiful weather. One of my favorite things to do is host small dinner parties. We would make a homemade charcuterie board and gather around our outside dining table and fire up the grill. Laughter and healthy competition would also be waffling in the summer air – we love playing Catch Phase and it’s usually the boys vs. the girls. Our home is never short on love, it’s the truest form of healthiness.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I believe that I would’t be standing as tall or as confident if it wasn’t for the continued love and support of my amazing best friend and husband, Rob Gaspard. He is truly one of my biggest cheerleaders in life and starting my own health and wellness business was no exception. He loves seeing me happy and in my zone and will make sure I have the perfect amount of time to dedicate to this ever-growing business. I am so blessed to have a teammate in my life that picks up the slack, diverts his path when necessary, and makes sure I have what I need in order to feel supported, loved, and honored. He may not always fully understand what I am doing or why, but that doesn’t seem to matter much to him. He trusts me, my instincts, and my discpline. He loves watching me soar and I am in awe of his daily support and encouragement. Plus, who wouldn’t want to live with their own coach, right? He especially loves when my meal planning and prepping spills right into his lunchbox.
