We had the good fortune of connecting with Sebastian Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sebastian, are there risks you’ve taken that you are really happy about in retrospect?
The scariest risk I ever took was quitting my job and pursuing my dream to be a full time artist. I have my wife to thank for believing in me and encouraging me to pursue that path. A lot of my success is credited to my wife pushing me towards my dreams. I am forever grateful to a life partner who is so faithful.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I work mostly as a Caricature artist but move away from a traditional style of Caricature art. I love interpreting the world around me into abstract and sci-fi story-telling illustrations/caricatures. In 2019 I was awarded the “Golden Nosey Award” for Caricature artist of the year by the International Society of Caricature Artists. I also am a small business owner of ColorBox Entertainment which I’ve been doing full time creating caricatures for 2 years now. I am one of many artists that stands on the shoulders of giants so I have so many artists to thank. It’s a scary thing to put your work out there and see how the world will respond to your work. However, you quickly realize there is an audience out there for your style of work. The lessons I’ve learned over the years is to be authentic with my artwork. I try not to imitate another artist or hide who I am in my artwork. I’ve come to love creating what comes naturally to me. As a result I began to build an audience. If you try to speak to everyone you speak to no-one. You can only speak to those who are just like you. People are looking for the real you and someone to relate to. The beginning of it all was not easy. My story is not an uncommon story of someone who was a dreamer. I had a goal to be an artist and I knew God had intended for me to be just that. The biggest challenge was not the negative comments from others but myself. We are our own worst enemies. I had to push myself when things got hard. If you concentrate on your dreams and goals then all other obstacles disappear.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
If I wanted to show a visitor something interesting I’d take them anywhere there was a saguaro cactus. They are the most interesting things we have here in Arizona. A majority of friends who come to visit always leave with a handful of photos of themselves with a cactus despite the surrounding attractions.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank and give recognition to the community of the International Society of Caricature Artists. They are a global network of Caricaturists who have helped recognize so many talented artists.
