We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Trinkl and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
I started my business prior to having my own children and since having children I’ve done my best to juggle it all. I am a full-time mompreneur working from home and trying to balance my time between my kiddos and my business. It has always been important for me to not only teach them but show them the importance of hard work and quality family time. I can easily involve them in many of my daily business tasks. They enjoy helping and I can teach them so much during this time. I love sharing my business with them and feel like I am making an impact in their lives.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Vino and Canvas is a pop-up paint and sip business. Many like-minded businesses have a studio location for their customers to visit. We are different! We do not have a studio! As a mobile business we travel everywhere. We bring the painting party to YOU; your home, your office, or your neighborhood bar/restaurant. Additionally, this year has brought big change to how we paint together. We’re now also offering virtual classes. A casual online class is the perfect time to uncork some wine and dive deep into your creative side. So hop online or invite us over, we’ll provide you a fun and informative step-by-step class.
To date, we’ve held over 3,000 classes and have painted with over 30,000 customers. That’s a lot of masterpieces! I founded Vino and Canvas in January of 2013 and the first months were challenging. I needed to fill my classes and grow my team. At that time, a partnership with Groupon is what significantly helped grow our classes. I knew we needed to create a memorable and fun experience that would bring people back again and again without the advantage of such a coupon. The coupon was a great introduction and our new fans spread the word to their friends. Later a Very Important Painter (VIP) program was created and those who attended a minimum of five classes would become forever VIPs with a lifetime discount on class fees on all public classes. In 2020, I changed the focus of our business and we now only offer private parties and corporate events. Our VIPs still receive an amazing discount and my team and I can truly focus on giving our customers a memorable class. We’re offering a more personalized experience with custom paintings, personalized pet portraits, event rentals, and/or décor.
Providing incredible customer service is always a priority of ours while adapting our business model to current trends and needs. Not only are we now offering virtual classes but we also now offer art-minded apparel and accessories on our website. As a small business owner we’ve experienced a huge set back with the coronavirus pandemic but we’re still optimistic. We know that we’ll someday be back in our customers’ homes and until then we can at least see them virtually. I’m excited to see what the future brings.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My family and I have lived in Cave Creek for many years. When a friend or family member visits from another state, we always spend time in the downtown Cave Creek area. I especially love breakfast at Big Earl’s Greasy Eats or The Grotto Cave, a hike at Spur Cross Ranch Conservation, lunch at Local Johnny’s, and live music in the evening at Janey’s Coffee Co. & Bodega or the Buffalo Chip Saloon and Steakhouse. These are just a few of my favorites. Know that there are many great restaurants and shops to choose from. Overall, I love the feel of the old west that Cave Creek holds and love to share it with friends.
If more time allows, a trip up north to visit the Verde Valley Wine Trail is a must! Spend the day or the weekend tasting wines at one of the many wineries or tasting rooms. My husband and I have been members of Page Springs Cellars for years. We not only love the wines and food but also love the patios overlooking Oak Creek and the vineyard. There are three additional vineyards near by. Then make the trip into Cottonwood, AZ where you can explore a number of tasting rooms on foot. Our favorites are Burning Tree Cellars and Pillsbury Wine Company. Spend the night in Cottonwood, enjoy dinner at Pizzeria Bocce Patio Bar, grab a night cap at Kactus Kate’s Saloon, and enjoy breakfast at Crema Craft Kitchen before heading back into town.
I love Arizona and all it has to offer. If it’s a hot summer day, you’ll likely find my family and I in the pool. The rest of the year, we’re out! Find us outdoors with our amazing neighbors, at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, a food, wine, or beer festival, enjoying live music, an Arizona Cardinals football game, Cave Creek Rodeo Days, spring training, visiting an Arizona state park, or simply enjoying one of our stunning sunsets. There’s so much to do!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Gargantuan shout-out to my husband Rick; my super domestique!! His unconditional love, support, encouragement, and wisdom is what inspirited me to start my business, Vino and Canvas, in late 2012. He is my sounding board, my rock, my go-to and my number one fan. He supports me and all of my ideas endlessly. Rick is selfless and gives every bit of himself to our family. I truly would not have my business if it were not for him. I likely wouldn’t have my sanity either. I’m a lucky gal.
