We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Gaines and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mike, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
In regards to podcasting, i’ve taken some big risks. There have been times where I wasn’t sure if i should reach out to a potential guest, or if i would get a response back. It’s easy to get caught up in your own mind wondering if a person of influence would want to be a guest. But, you’ll never know unless you go for it. So in my opinion the risk starts in your mind, it’s up to you to push forward and go for it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been podcasting (The Positive Gaines Podcast) for just about 4 1/2 years. I’m closing in on 100 episodes, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have some recognizable faces on as guests. I’ve had John Mosley ( ELAC Head Basketball Coach – Last Chance U on Netflix) Omar Gooding ( Baby Boy, Smart Guy, Wild & Crazy Kids) Kareem Grimes ( AKA Preach – All American) Katherine Norland ( Dhar Mann Series Regular). I always tell people you don’t have to be “famous” to be my guest. I look for a brand/organization with a positive movement and, as long as we can align there, everything else will work out. Each guest shares stories and advice for everyone. It’s been a blessing having so many different people on, but it definitely hasn’t been easy. Time zones, days off, and schedules, can make it a bit difficult to organize an interview. I’ve learned to take more time by remembering quality over quantity. We need more positivity in the world now, more than ever!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are many great places to choose from! For starters I’d say a Suns/DBacks game. The Desert Botanical Garden, The Heard Museum, and for nightlife Old Town Scottsdale. The Trapp Haus BBQ is some of the best BBQ that you can find. If you’re into rooftop dining check out Thea.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout would go to my late mother Saundra Gaines. She passed away last year and it was the hardest thing i’ve ever gone through. She shaped me into the man that I am today. In fact i wrote a children’s book about my mom adopting me, which is available on Amazon. I also would shoutout my wife and kids who have been my rock, and supported me on this journey since day 1. All of my extended family and friends deserve credit as well, i truly feel like i have the best support system!
