We had the good fortune of connecting with Mikel Whelan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mikel, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born in AZ and grew up in the Southwest, then moved back here about 25 years ago. My parents always instilled a strong work ethic in me and to do my best at everything. That’s transferred over to the work I do. Do quality work and treat the customer well.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I like the think of my art as cartoons with a realistic twist to them. Like a comic book. Coming from a comic background, I’m able to draw virtually anything and have it look dynamic. Getting where I am today wasn’t easy and the journey will never be over. Everyday I strive to put out a better product than previously. And that’s all being brought up with a good work ethic. What I’ve learned along the way…besides the technical part of learning like anatomy, color theory, etc. and learning necessary programs. Learning the other side of things like dealing with customers, managing yourself, etc. which is just as important. I always push for creating the best experience for the customer and end up with something that I’m proud of.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When you don’t have to worry about bursting into flames when you go outside, I like going to the MIM or driving up to Sedona or Flagstaff. I love Mexican food and go to Frank and Lupe’s in downtown Scottsdale when I’m able. I’m quite fond of the Bonehaus Brewery in Fountain Hills. The beer is fantastic and the décor/ ambiance is amazing. The people that are there are some of the nicest around and I can’t say enough good things about the owner Keith Chapman.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family deserves a shoutout since they’ve made it into what I am today. They’ve been supportive in all my crazy ideas and endeavors.
