We had the good fortune of connecting with Mónica Vilches and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mónica, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

I’m not going to lie to you, I had a mixed of feelings, fear, nerves, fear again, emotion, anxiety, however I didn’t want to stop this feeling, it happens to me every time I create a new project; I read somewhere that when you have half fear and half emotion for an idea it is a good sign, and my life is full of signs, so I decide day by day to flow with emotion, you will always have good and bad days, but you must hear your inner wisdom, that will be your guide, what you feel in your stomach, what makes noise until you achieve it, and the result is the most wonderful feeling

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Easy? I don’t think there is anyone who says that a career based on creativity is easy, especially if you want to make a living from this, being creative is fun, it entertains me, I need to be constantly in this area, of course, it is not only part of my job, It is part of my life, the food of my soul. I love when some clients look for me and say, “I want something different and I know that you will know how to express it in photography”, I feel that they see me inside. For me photography is more than the typical beautiful photo, I have to tell you a story, I have to move something inside you through my photography, it can be a perfect stone in an imperfect place, an empty look, a dry leaf in a immense lake, a hand full of wrinkles on a silk; If my photo does not tell you something, then I have not achieved the mission.

It has not been easy either, because precisely today, people expect to always look beautiful in photos, they rarely want to tell something. That’s why I always make an appointment in advance to get to know them more, to know what they really want with this photo session; I have to handle two sides of the coin, the commercial one, because it is the one that puts money in my pocket and the expressive and intense one because it is the one that fills me with the crazy and old artist side of my soul.

What makes me different from others? , I suppose that time is an interesting point, when I do a photo session, it is not just another client, it is a personal project, I want them to leave that day with the feeling that there is trust, I do not demand time, I do not like it jumping from one photo to another just to get a job done quickly, which is why I usually have only one package. As I said before, the client who is looking for me is because he knows my work.

My art? Maybe that’s what you don’t realize right now as you read and lights, contrasts, rays of sunlight surround you, the clothes thrown on the bed that tell me what happened last night, the shadow that follows you, the cat that studies you from its corner , the look of your son while you speak to him with a sweet voice, what you do not see … that is my art.

I love learning about life, people, my images, my work, my failures, especially failures, I have so much to learn and always look forward

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I already experienced this situation, my best friend came with her boyfriend to visit for the first time from Chile, I had to take them to the surrounding towns, Sedona, Flagstaff, definitely eat chocolate at the chocolate factory in Sedona, the snow in Snow bowl. In my city Tempe, I would take her downtown, to walk to the bridge, we would probably sit and watch the people go by, the children having fun in the afternoon. to most of the malls, we would eat in an Italian restaurant, I remember taking them to see the show that Apache Junctión do, in Goldfield ghost town, we ate ice cream in the only ice cream parlor in that place.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I can not give credit to a single person when there have been many more throughout my life, even people I do not know who give me their “I love your job” motivate you to continue believing in what you do and inspire you to continue. In photography I can’t stop mentioning my teacher Carlos J Carpio, what I respect the most about him is his passion in photography and his dedication.
Friends along the way, who have had the right words to motivate when doubts appear, people who have held my hand for a long time and helped me when expenses were heavy.
How to forget María Angelica Costamayer, who worked in the Chilean Ministry of Education, she motivated me daily to follow my dreams and she was the one who pushed me at an early age to travel the world to learn more, thanks to her I also started my career in theater. As you can see, many people built the person who today creates their own dreams, no path is so easy, but when you have a passion, a dream, and people who believe in you, who support you, who guide you, it is more easy to get to any top.
life itself is my great motivation.
