We had the good fortune of connecting with Moriah Kennard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Moriah, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to bring to life the joys of the WIld Wild West spirit by repurposing the vintage clothing. I love the bright colors and landscape designs of Arizona which inspires my pieces. I hope to share this through a creative outlet by offering colorful, bright and unique Western clothing. By giving the pieces a second chance of life, it influences a new generation of shoppers and Western enthusiasts. I wanted to motivate others to not take fashion too seriously but to reevaluate fashion through the lense of sustainability. I also wanted to create a business that speaks to the beautiful landscape of Arizona while also having a postiive impact on the world.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets Wild Heart Vintage apart from others is that the focus is on vintage clothing–specifically geared toward the classic looks and styles from the 70s to the early 90s. I draw inspiration from the classic cowboy look to the cute Roper cowgirl vibe. I am always excited to find pieces that are no longer in production such as Rocky Mountain Denium and one-of-a-kind vintage boots. My business grows from finding new pieces, attending new events, and drawing inspiration from creating something from nothing with my brand. Growing the brand has been challenging, but it is beneficial in knowing that it is my own. I have learned to channel in on my target audience and have learned how to connect my pieces to the buyers. My brand is reflective of my heart, soul, and passion for the Wild Wild West and Western clothing. What I want people to know about brand it that they need to feel wild and free and comfortable in what they are wearing, which had inspired the name, Wild Heart Vintage.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had someone visiting from out of town, my first stop would be the Superstition Mountains. This rugged desert mountain range offers a variety of hiking trails catering to all skill levels – from leisurely walking paths to some of the most challenging treks in Arizona. After working up an appetite on the trails, we’d head to Handlebar in Apache Junction to refuel with their renowned burgers and enjoy the inviting patio seating. Then the following day I would spend at the local shops downtown in Apache Junction as well as Mesa. From Call it New/ Call it Anitque in to Nash Vintage Collection there is a wide varity of local spots to hit for great shopping and great antiques.
To experience the local culture, I’d take my guest to explore the vibrant markets around town. The Mint Market, Gilbert Farmers Market, and Mesa Swap Meet are fantastic spots to browse unique artisanal goods, fresh produce, and eclectic finds from local vendors. For a taste of the area’s culinary delights, we’d visit Spinato’s Pizzeria in Tempe to indulge in their famous spaghetti calzones, and Mama Bears BBQ in Mesa for the best Texas-style barbecue around.
Weekend Getaway to Tombstone and Bisbee
For a quick weekend getaway, we’d head south to the historic towns of Tombstone and Bisbee. In Tombstone, we’d immerse ourselves in the local scene by visiting spots like the Tombstone Brewery and strolling through the charming antique shops. Then, we’d continue our journey to Bisbee, where we’d embark on a fascinating mine tour at the Copper Queen Mine and savor a delicious dinner at Cafe Roka. The following day, we’d hike up to the iconic Bisbee ‘B’ and explore the town’s unique staircases, winding through the picturesque streets.
This diverse itinerary would provide my guest with a well-rounded experience, combining outdoor adventures, local flavors, cultural exploration, and a glimpse into Arizona’s rich history.
