We had the good fortune of connecting with Mya Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mya, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
I am a single parent of four beautiful kids, 3 of which I birthed and one of which I adopted. I believe the most important thing that I have done to impact my children is to make sure you are kind to other and keep moving. By trade and career, I am in the human services umbrella. Currently, I am a school-based clinician. My oldest (14 years) has seen and heard me speak about my work and now wants to follow suit and asks questions about my major and what kind of people I help and says she also would like to help people. The next impact is “keep going”. I think it’s very important as a parent in general to always model the behavior you want your kids to have. As I single parent I have so many hoops to jump through and life is not an easy task. Although things get tough and I sometimes express my overwhelmed I always keep going, I can’t let my children down. I will fight tooth and nail for their future so hopefully one day they don’t have to fight so hard. My kids see me every day, wake up, get myself ready, assure they are ready, get them off to preschool/school, get myself to work, come home take care of my motherly duties, and also work on my small candle business at the end of the day. As they grow older, I wish for them to see that I never gave up, no matter how frustrated, overwhelmed, or sad I got, I always fought to make sure their future was good and set up. Last but not least, I believe the other impactful thing is that I always make sure that I make time for an interact with each kid as well. I think my ambition is one thing for them to see but if we also don’t have memories of that one on one time with each other all of the other stuff will mean very little. This one on one time doesn’t happen a lot but I make sure that it does happen, as a single parent with little support it’s hard to find the time but I make it happen. Some of the things include, going for walks, shopping, getting our nails done (the girls), playing uno, coloring, and going to community events.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is Candles! I utilize Coconut Apricot Luxury Wax in my candles which allows for a much cleaner and longer burn for your candles. My candles are a huge part of my life, me creating candles has taken me through many dark moments in my life. My theme for my candles is positive vibes and affirmations, I chose this because as I’ve said creating candles has really gotten me through tough times. I went on this path not only because of my career but because mental health is real and having those reminders that you can see every day on one of my candles can help a person’s mind to reframe just by seeing a word or a phrase. My journey to where I am now with my candles has been a rocky road and still can be at times. There have been numerous changes that I have made since initially starting last April. I have spilled candles, dropped candles, overfilled candles, started with products I didn’t necessarily know about that were not quality products, changed my vessels several times, changed my website a few times, etc. It’s been a journey for sure, but life’s a journey. Throughout that journey, I have learned what I prefer and the path that I want to take on this journey and hope that others love and continue to love it as well. What I would like the world to know about my brand is, it’s meant to give off positivity and hope. I would also like the world to know that my candles are hand-made in small batches which means a lot of love gets poured into these candles when being made. I think about my customers when making these candles and hope to bring smiles to their faces. What I want the world to know about my story is that I am a single mother always striving to do my best for my kids, I am a resilient person so no matter what happens or what I’ve been through I keep going. I want people to know it’s ok to show and embrace their emotions and continue to go after what their goals are.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have honestly not been to too many places unless they are kid-friendly. However, I would say that Scottsdale has many great things to do and see, Tempe has many great things to see and offer as well as Glendale (Westgate area). These three areas also have awesome nightlife and exciting people around.

Alright, so let’s jump right in! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there a person, group, organization, book, etc. that you want to dedicate your shoutout to? Who else deserves a little credit and recognition in your story?
First and foremost my Shout out goes to God. I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for him. Secondly, I will shout out to my mother who is no longer walking this earth, however, I definitely wouldn’t be the woman, mother, and person that I am if it was not for her. My mother will always remain my backbone and my biggest supporter but now it’s from a spirited side. I have a very close friend named Doni that I absolutely love and adore and is always here to give me advice on any matter and a person that I can trust with no thoughts asked, I’m uncertain if she knows just how much she means to me and the impact she has had on my life since I’ve known her but she is such an amazing human and I’m grateful for her.
Of course, I have a few other close friends and relationships that I absolutely love and adore as well. These individuals have also impacted my life and my kid’s life since I have known them. I truly appreciate every person in my life and they each play their unique roles and impaction in my life.
