We had the good fortune of connecting with Nancy Hetrick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nancy, how did you fund your business? Do you think you would do anything different if you could go back?
I started my business on a shoe-string budget. Rather than spending a lot of money on marketing or advertising, I learned it myself. In the age of Google, you can learn anything you need to learn. I built my own website, learned all about SEO, Search Engine Optimization, did constant content creation and writing and blogging and networked in my community at least 3 times a week to spread the word. It was very important to me to not start my business with a debt load that would weigh heavily on my. Another strategy was to maintain my existing cash flow employment during the initial start-up phase so that I wasn’t 100% exposed.
What should our readers know about your business?
When I went through my own divorce in 2007, the whole process just seemed so barbaric. We were reasonable people so we really didn’t want to be treated like criminals by attorneys and judges and we didn’t necessarily need a communication referee in a mediator. What seemed nowhere to be found, was expertise on crafting a property settlement agreement given a fairly complicated financial picture involving multiple real estate holdings and various retirement accounts. The only option available to us was a do-it-yourself divorce which ultimately resulted in errors, conflict and years of disagreements. Then I learned about the CDFA® credential. Certified Divorce Financial Analyst and I became passionate about offering couples an alternative. An uncoupling choice that would be handled out of court, with no lawyers, judges or courtrooms, but all the financial expertise to educate the parties on their choices and the consequences of those choices before they sign any agreements. A choice that is based in honor and respect and the desire to preserve the co-parenting relationship for any children. Since I started in 2012, my business has evolved to a team of 6 including 2 CDFA holders, 3 total financial advisors, 4 total mediators, 2 certified divorce coaches, one financial coach, and one office manager. As you can guess by those numbers, several team members wear multiple hats. Our goal is to be able to address the holistic needs of the people going through this very difficult time. Our hope is to build out the model even further with the “Smarter Divorce Center”. I have 7 available offices in my new location and I’m hoping to partner with an Estate Planning attorney, a CPA, potentially a massage therapist, a mental health counselor, etc. and really build out a sanctuary for those faced with divorce.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Having grown up in Montana, the culture available in Phoenix is always fun to show my friends from out of town. We kind of love the neighborhood bars like Lookout Tavern and il Asilo in North Phoenix where we live. Since we have a whole week, I’d be sure to take them to the Botanical Gardens where we are members to get the real taste of the desert. A nice hike on Lookout Mountain by my house would be a great little outing and since we’re motorcycle riders, we might have to load up and head north to Prescott, Payson or Sedona. So many choices!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to my business coach, Vanessa Shaw. Her programs were instrumental in my success and growth over the last 4 years. Since working with her my revenues have increased 100% and I”m on track to generate a million dollars in revenue this year. I also would never have been able to achieve this level of success without the love and support of my amazing husband, Tom. He supports me at every turn. Lastly, my team. I have 5 of the most amazing women on my team and I could NOT do anything without them. We all support and lift each other up every day and we feel so lucky to be part of this organization. I’m so grateful for them.
