We had the good fortune of connecting with Natali Medlen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Natali, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
When I was in high school I remember seeing this motivational poster on the wall in science class stating, “You can’t choose your circumstances but you can choose to overcome them.” Ever since then I have chosen to live my life by that. Regardless of how tough times may have been for me I knew I had to do something in order to change my situation. Reading this quote every day in class gave me hope that I could get through anything if I tried hard enough.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Built4This Personal Training LLC. is a private personal training studio which offers training sessions by appointment only. There are a total of eight soon to be nine trainers who all have different niches which range from extreme weight loss to yoga. What sets Built4This apart from the other gyms is the atmosphere. Every trainer and client knows each other even if they don’t train with the same person. It’s like a “Cheers,” from back in the day where every knows your name. The studio is colorful with vibrant artwork that my mother painted. It’s hard not to walk in their and stay bummed for very long because it is so inviting. What I am most proud of is that I was able to give other trainers a place to work out of during one of the hardest times in our history. April 1st of 2021 will be my 1 year anniversary of opening the studio. Ever since I can remember my mother has been an entrepreneur owning several different businesses which is exactly where I got it from. Was it easy??? Absolutely not! First off I never wanted to be an entrepreneur I wanted a more secure job which is why I went to school to be a medial assistant. I had hoped to become a nurse and was interested in taking prerequisites for this. However, in 2011 I competed in my first bikini competition and literally just fell in love with the whole process. So I changed my mind and ended up becoming a personal trainer. Even after that I still didn’t plan on opening up my own studio in fact I didn’t want to but it organically happened. Some of my clients wanted to get their certification and come work with me. Then I had friends who wanted to come and join me. So here I am (lol) with my own gym in 2021 just barley making it out of covid. Opening a business is hard enough and then you throw a massive pandemic in the mix. Needless to say there were lots of challenges to overcome. The only reason I believe I did well is because I’ve always been willing to listen to others. Take constructive criticism, learn, and be flexible to change even if it may not be my ideal way of doing things. I will say I am grateful for hiring a business coach and accountants. This taught me a lot about myself and I was able to see where my strengths and weaknesses are. What do I want the world to know about my brand and story… If I can open up a business and thrive during covid than anyone else can too.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Tumamoc Hill, Sabino Canyon, Catalina State Park, and of course Mt Lemmon. Village Bakehouse would be the spot for an amazing cupcake, The Parish for a nice little cocktail, Chef Alisha’s for dinner and since it’s Tucson Mi Nidito Restaurant for Mexican food. Down town is always a great place to walk around for a variety of fun.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost my husband Shane Medlen for supporting me no matter what and encouraging me to follow my dreams! My family for helping me out in big and small ways to get the gym looking beautiful. Alexandria Winslow my mother for letting me display her beautiful artwork in my studio. Lamonte Henley from Arizona Health & Fitness for all of my great gym equipment. Starweb Creative, Celestial Photography, and Octavia Media for helping me get my information up on the internet. The Pfordt family for helping me clean all of the gym equipment and donating their Apple computer. Honestly, the list can go on and on because I have had so many clients support me through this whole process. If it wasn’t for all of the love in the community I wouldn’t be in business today or survived covid19!
