We had the good fortune of connecting with Ned Bustard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ned, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my business out of desperation! My former employer had run out of work, so I went out on my own. I had grown up in a small business family so the idea of being an entrepreneur wasn’t too scary for me. And I also had a company I had been moonlighting for that I could bring on as my first main client.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
If people are aware of me and my work, it is likely connected with “Every Moment Holy,” a series of books I have illustrated and designed for Rabbit Room Press. I am grateful for being involved with that project and the wide impact it has had. And lately I have also written and illustrated a number of books for IVP Kids. Those projects have brought me great joy and creative freedom. Much of that work has been related to my passion for linocut printmaking. I am also proud of the work I have done of the past two decades though my graphic design company, World’s End Images. Branding, book design, and general beautification has been how I have fed my family and cared for my community. Finally, I am exceedingly thankful for Square Halo Books, a company I helped found and for which I serve as creative director. We recently marked our 25th year in business and have produced over forty books on a shoe string and a prayer.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I grew up in the Philadelphia area and still feel like that is home, but over the past two decades I have lived in the west end of historic Lancaster city in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Of course the first thing on our agenda, should a good friend visit, would be to take them to my Square Halo Gallery. Located in the arts district near Central Market. I’d also get my daughter to get me comp tickets for the Fulton Opera House to see a show there (she has been working there this past year). There are many notable historic places to visit, but I’d probably plan plan some daytrips to the DelCo/Philly area—go to the Brandywine River Museum, the Rodin Museum, and the PMA. Then back in Lancaster we would walk all over the downtown and try all the local restaurants—Flora’s, Sprout, C’est La Vie, The Exchange, Annie Baileys, and more.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
