We had the good fortune of connecting with Nevaeh / Ashlee Douglas / Mclarty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nevaeh / Ashlee, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind Not Ur Friend started out as equal opportunity shopping. Giving people the chance to find hidden gems for a base price; no matter the brand or retail number. We had been interested in the vintage/ resale community prior to starting our business, constantly attending events and looking for underground thrift shops. A common theme we found was the upsell of vintage items. This stood out to us because there is such a market for preloved clothing, and people are willing to purchase resale at the same price (if not more) than retail. The more we got into sustainable fashion the more we realized that we wanted to do something different; give everyone the opportunity to find a piece they love without putting a dent in their wallet. Our prices never exceed twenty dollars per item, and we always have a five dollar bin filled with amazing finds. We are building the brand we dreamed about when we were younger. Another key factor that went into creating Not Ur Friend was showing younger girls that their style makes them unique and that their expression through clothing is beautiful. You don’t have to shop fast fashion and environmentally hurtful brands to keep up with society. You are one of a kind, why shouldn’t your style be? Creating a safe space for people to embrace themselves and what makes them feel most confident is the most important part to us.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We take a lot of pride in providing a more environmentally effective way to shop. By shopping at local thrift shops, garage sales, and the constant donations from friends & family, we are able to rework and rehome incredible items that already have so much history and love. Only starting in February, we still have so much to learn and conquer, and we will never stop sharing our love for sustainable fashion. We consider ourselves to be a curated thrift experience; with one of a kind pieces that you will love just as much as us. We provide you with sizing and styles YOU are looking for, and want your to feel like the piece was meant for you (because it was). Starting Not Ur Friend was an expression of our true selves. NUF is the idea that your uniqueness does not need to be defined by anyone. True friends embrace differences, help each other find that confidence within themselves, and stand behind you no matter what. You are beyond loved and admired, anyone who tells you different is Not Ur Friend.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Our by far favorite thing to do in Phoenix is to attend local events! We love participating in (and attending) events such as First Friday, art walks, farmers markets, etc. Phoenix is such an incredibly communal city; being able to go out and meet new people, network, shop small, and support local are huge factors for us!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We want to thank all of the people in our lives that consistently support what we stand for, share what we do, model our clothing, lend a helping hand, attend our events, and shop Not Ur Friend. Thank you for believing in us, for always showing up for us, and for all of the encouragement as we dive into a whole new world. You guys are the reason we do what we do, and we would be nowhere without you. We love you!!
