We had the good fortune of connecting with Nikki Ortgea and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nikki, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite quote that mean the world to me is, ” The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” I have had some amazing journeys and they all started with a single step forward. This includes my move from Arizona to Florida, my nursing career, our family relocation back to Arizona but most of all starting Spicy Sassy Dulces. The scariest step was creating my brand, making my product and getting feedback from friends and family and eventually my customers. All of the steps I have taken have helped me to create a company I am proud of and during a time when the whole world was changing. Spicy Sassy Dulces helped me to find joy, when as working as a bedside RN, I was seeing sadness, fear and death more than I ever had before. Those steps helped to heal me and it brought my customers joy.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well I wear two hats, I am a Registered Nurse and a Dulce Creator. I truly believe nursing helped prepare me to start my own business. It is one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life and there are days I come home feeling defeated and there are other days I come home feeling like I made a difference, in my patients life. During the pandemic so much of that changed for all of us in the healthcare industry, we faced the unknown in a way that was draining both mentally and physically. During this time I also started my little side hustle, I made some chamoy candies for myself and shared with my coworkers. They loved the treats and they wanted more….hence how Spicy Sassy Dulces came about. This journey was not easy, it has been three steps forward and an occasional step back, kind of like a cha cha. I was able to overcome some of these challenges by asking for help from others and learning from my missteps. Owning a business is about leaning and continuously growing and mentoring others. One thing I want people to know about Spicy Sassy Dulces is that I put my love and heart into all that I make and I am thankful for their support.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Since we relocated back to Arizona, many of our friends and family from Florida have come out to see us and we have 3 places we take them to. Everyone wants to see the Grand Canyon, so we always head up to Flagstaff and we make a few stops along the way. After leaving the Valley, we will stop in Sedona to show off the beauty in this area and have lunch along Oak Creak Canyon, next is stop in Prescott to have a drink and walk around Whiskey Row and finally we make it into Flagstaff. The area around NAU has a ton of great places to eat and have a drink or two. The next morning, we head to the Grand Canyon and explore the different areas. As an AZ native I had not been to the Grand Canyon as much as I have since moving back to AZ. Now as an adult I love seeing how different it looks in each Season. And we always have lunch at the lodge and relax and catch up.
Lastly we take everyone to my hometown, Globe AZ, everyone is treated to what I will say is the best Mexican food in Arizona, Guayo’s on the Trail. The owners have been friends of my family for over 90 years. There is nothing like a number 6 plate enchilada style. I am proud to be an Arizona Native and I love sharing my culture and my state with others.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband, our daughter, my family and most importantly my co-workers at the hospital. My husband for supporting my dream and helping me to start my small business. Our daughter for helping me to use social media to gain support for my small business. My family for their help and support and my nieces and nephews for being the best employees. To my Co-workers for being my first customers and helping me to grow the business, with out them I would never have started selling my dulces.
