We had the good fortune of connecting with Painted Soul Entertainment Desiree and Damon White and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Painted Soul Entertainment, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
At the age young of 20, my world felt like it was crumbling quickly and without going into depth, my family and I were advised my father would soon die and we needed to prep funeral arrangements immediately. In that moment, I clung to my faith and prayed as often as I could. I pondered deeply, “If my father lives what do I want to share with my dad the most?” I Instantly thought of how much the joy of music carried our family through multiple forms of adversity. I told myself WHEN my dad gets out of that hospital, we are going to start a band and bring joy, laughter, family and faith to each crowd we entertain! After a few months, we received confirmation our dad was being released. As soon as my dad was able to do so, we budgeted $1000 for very cheap and already used sound equipment which almost seemed a mission impossible! We had no business cards, we hired an amazing female drummer and awesome guitarist, and pianist. We performed at our very first open mic and instantly booked 3 different venues from networking that night! We knew we were meant to do this because opportunities kept coming our way! That was my mindset, that’s how this band started, and the rest is history.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
At times, our journey was definitely very hard. We constantly have to invest our money, time and effort into each new month. we are very grateful for where we are today, and we intend to continue to grow. However, some of the tough challenges we’ve faced were from different people who knew nothing about our journey and our drive. They told my dad he was too old to perform with me and told me I was too young to pursue music. Aside from people, we’ve also dealt with racism from some major resorts and even venues whose staff and crowds tend to be more predominately white. We were told we needed to enter through the back of the building in some areas, while other bands entered through the front. We were treated very poorly by some people and through it all, we’ve learned to stick together. So-called friends will come and go but family remains. We’ve learned not all money is good money. We left those venues that treated us poorly based on the color of our skin. We also, stopped taking advise from people who only intended to be malicious toward our band. Yes, we’ve come a very long way. we’re grateful for each learning experience. We know we’ll continue to face new challenges but the experience through these lessons are also very rewarding.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A few of my favorite places include The Wild Vine Uncorked, so we’d definitely make a reservation there for a night with Painted Soul Entertainment. The staff is always amazing, the food is always so savory and delicious, and the environment evolves into crowds singing, people dancing and a unique and fun night out! We’d also shop for a day at The Kierland Commons! There aren’t very many places you listen to live music and shop! St Amand is also one of our favorite venues, the food is always delicious, and the crowds tend to be so much fun! These are only a few of the amazing places we perform!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I did initially start our business but my dad is an equal partner in Painted Soul Entertainment and so I would love to shoutout my dad. This band started with my dad in mind, and he is who has inspired me through music and showed me how powerful music can be in someone’s life. He taught me that music is emotion, a language, heart to heart and soul to soul. Our family and father daughter dynamic keeps us going and helps us to take our listeners on a journey to escape through the art of song!
