We had the good fortune of connecting with Paula Beougher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Paula, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I read a Nelson Mandela quote not too long ago and it truly captured my state of mind regarding risk. Nelson Mandela said “I never lose. I either win or learn.” For me I take risks because I am not scared of failure or losing. In fact I view never taking the risk as the only failure or loss. Of course, as a pharmacist, I cannot take a risk with peoples’ health or safety. That is of most importance. The risk comes into play with my career choices. I decided to go in a different direction and take the risk of opening my own pharmacy.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I graduated from University of Arizona with a degree from Chemistry and History in 2001. Five years later I applied to the Midwestern University(Glendale) pharmacy program and I was accepted. I graduated in 2009 as a Doctor of Pharmacy. I spent ten years managing several Walgreens pharmacies and one independent pharmacy. I managed compounding, specialty and retail pharmacies. Additionally to AZ I became licensed in TX, CO and OR. I have learned so much along the way. Two things really come to mind …..One, never compromise patient safety. Patient safety ALWAYS comes first. My job is protect my patients and keep them safe. And two, never become complacent and stop wanting to learn something new. Additionally I want everyone to know I want to know all of my patients by name and face. I believe that a good healthcare provider knows his or her patients.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I love going on staycations in the summer, specifically the Westin(Kierlyn). I like being outside and hiking, particularly Camelback mountain. I enjoy spending time at the wineries up north(Cottonwood area). I love eating at Oreganos, Pita Jungle, and Barrio Queen. Outside of that, our family loves the Cardinals Football, so I can never pass up going to a game in the fall.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
So many people helped me out in the last year. My family (Chad, Della and Avery) have been on this roller coaster ride from day one. Their support and love has been unconditional. Several friends supported throughout this last year. Carolyn Berenger helped me market, Lindsay Jenks helped promote the business on social media. Denise Thompson from N2 publishing connected me with several local businesses that helped grow the pharmacy.
