We had the good fortune of connecting with Phay Dee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Phay, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
When I moved to Arizona from Florida, I felt like I was missing something. I didn’t have any family or friends here and I was feeling alone. After doing some research, I learned that black people only made up about 4% of the entire population of Arizona. It was at that point that I knew that black women needed a way to connect with each other. I created the Black Women of Arizona to provide other women with the opportunity to network, build relationships, and share experiences with one another. BWAZ is by far one of my greatest accomplishments. The support that I have received after creating this platform has been life-changing. I wanted to build a platform that went against the norm to show women that we are capable of incredible things when we come together.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Black Women of Arizona is a public women’s social group that is dedicated to providing a safe place for other women to network, build relationships, and share new experiences together. We typically host events in the East & West Valley and we also have a private Facebook community where we can share resources with each other.

The friendships that have been built and the business opportunities that have come to fruition because of this platform are what I am most proud of.

Running and managing a platform of over 10k members is no small feat. I realized that I needed help and building a team of women who not only hold me accountable, but believe in my vision and understand the importance of having a platform such a this has made all of the difference. I am grateful for all of the support that they have been able to provide.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would first grab some brunch because that’s my favorite meal of the day. We would definitely have to check out Pinspiration Peoria to enjoy some painting and mimosas. Since I love being by the water, we would probably check out Lake Pleasant to enjoy some nature. I have so many places that I enjoy in the Valley. Here are a few places: Confectionery Displays and Events, Cake Lady Studios & Events, Straw and Wool, Plugged AZ Boutique, and Nickel City Clothing.
