We had the good fortune of connecting with Phil Nmah and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Phil, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Consistency and Versatility: with my business as a dj, you have to stay consistent in this business in order to stay relevant or even make a significant impact/mark on the world. Versatility help people differentiate you for others, being someone that versatile help you have you own footprint that makes you stand out from others, and as a dj that’s very important because you have to know your strengths and weaknesses; you have to use both to your advantage so that others do not use it against you.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well I am a dj, I’ve been dj’n since I was an eight year old kid, I’ve always love music and the feeling it gives you just listening to the lyrics, melodies and different instruments combination that makes it whole. I’ve always love the way your emotions fluctuate when listening different songs and sounds. For me growing up I realized that music is the only language that is universal and that brings people together, the connection and impact it has on someone; example: an artist could explain his story in his music and about thousands of people would also have that same exact situation, which connects them and make them relate to that specific song. For me I believe I’m different from other djs because of my authenticity and realness in my music when dj’n. When even I perform I try to make sure I give my listeners the emotion behind each and every song I play so that they can feel exactly what I’m feeling playing all these music for them, that way we all on the same level. A lot of djs are now in the game just for the money and lifestyle, which shouldn’t be a good enough reason for you to be a dj, if I go to an event where I see a dj is just playing songs after songs with no connection with his/her crowd it make me feel sad because I understand the importance of music and the connection it brings.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well being a dj, I spend majority of my time in the clubs and hosting events. Outside of that I’m a very athletic person, therefore I do a lot of outdoor activities that involve sports such as: soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis, kickball etc. I love enjoying nature and experiencing the purity of it, I also love exploring and experiencing new adventures because I believe that life has a lot to offer and all we do as human is live it to the fullest. As for food wise, me personally I love the idea of brunch and I love experiencing the variety it in every city and I also love to travel.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First of I would like to greatly appreciate my parents for always supporting on my dreams of being a dj/entertainer, without the love and support of my friends and family I wouldn’t be the man I am today. I’ll then like to extend and big shout out to my fellow djs: @djafrik, @djfinessekid, @djwinner, @djacube, etc. with me surrounding myself with the likes of these amazing djs I was able to learn the strings of the dj industry and honestly speaking they’ve taught me so in this game. I’ll also like to give a big shoutout to my brother Sheikh Sirleaf for holding my down through thick and thin, he’s always been my go to for advice and just going through life with me.
