We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Beebe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel, why did you pursue a creative career?
I decided to pursue an artistic career because I wanted to genuinely love what I do. I know that sounds cliché, but if you’re going to work for a vast majority of your life – you might as well choose something fun! I wanted to be able to be fully myself, and express myself through my work.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
In 2019, I became a licensed esthetician. I knew I wanted my own little piece of the beauty world, I just wasn’t sure of my place in it, or what exactly my role would be. In March of 2021, I decided to start my own business and chose lash extensions as my specialty. I took a class to further my knowledge and gain some practice under my belt, then immediately opened Soft Winks within the same month.

My technique for “wispy” lash extension sets is definitely what pulls clients in now. I knew that finding my niche within the lash industry was important, due to how saturated it can be in larger cities, and wispy lashes just kind of fell into my lap! A wispy lash set is created by using several different lengths and fan sizes throughout the entire eye, but it can be molded and customized to each client’s liking and eye shape. It can be used to create a messy, natural look, or a darker, more dramatic lash line. It’s all in your technique and your client’s preference! Styling sets this way quickly became my favorite way to lash, and the more practice I got, the sharper my skills became.

Clients are also drawn to my work because of the education I provide. I have had too many new clients over the past year, confess they know little to nothing about the lash extension process, or about their natural lashes in general. I think it’s extremely important to always choose a service provider that continues to educate you through your journey with them. Keeping your natural lashes healthy, and making sure you understand how to keep them that way – will always be my number one priority.

One of the most important lessons I learned, and wish I had accepted sooner – allowing myself to be more flexible and open to new things. This can save you so much time in the beginning of building your business, and can even help propel your skill set farther than you originally expected. In the beginning of my journey, I was convinced I didn’t need to make any changes, I just needed to learn to be better with “what I already had”. This mindset held me back from changes that could have really pushed me to excel at my work.

Which brings me to my absolute most important lesson – mindset truly is everything as an entrepreneur. You have to not only want to succeed, but trust and believe that you will. To make it as a small business owner, you need to move with intention. You have to push yourself to do the “hard things”, and you have to know that even on your lowest days, you ARE successful.

I have been very intentional with the space I have created for myself, my business, and my clientele. I want people to know that Soft Winks is so much more than just a beauty business. We’re here for anyone and everyone, we’re here to make you feel your absolute best, to teach you true self love, confidence, and awareness. I want you to be the version of yourself, not for the people around you, but because YOU deserve this.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
While I’ve spent a large majority of my time living here quarantined due to COVID, there are a few places that have really stuck with me. You can never go wrong with a day trip to Sedona, one of the most beautiful and healing places I have been. I could spend the entire day roaming around the city, soaking up the scenery, and picking up some new crystals at the metaphysical shops nearby.

As far as Phoenix goes, I really enjoying spending the day checking out any and all local thrift stores I can find. White Dove, Brass Armadillo, and Camelback Antiques are definitely up there as my favorites. My house is currently overflowing with all the sweet little treasures I’ve been lucky enough to discover.

I’m convinced Paradise Valley Burger Co has the best impossible burgers out there, you can swap it for any of the regular burgers on their menu which I really appreciate. Hands down one of my favorite places. Tacos Huicho, specifically the location on Thunderbird, has never let me down, and always provides the absolute best pollo asada tacos. A bit closer to home, Simple Machine Brewing Co has a great atmosphere and always has the best food trucks out front. Never a disappointment!

I have 4 dogs, so most of the time when I’m out, I’m spending it at a nearby park with them! Paseo Highlands park is pretty close by, and absolutely massive. There’s plenty of space to let my boys run around, play fetch, and enjoy a fresh change of scenery. It’s also large enough for us to keep our distance, for my dogs that aren’t exactly into socializing.

Grabbing a quick impossible burger at PV Burger Co, bringing it to the park with one or 2 of my dogs, and just enjoying the day is my absolute favorite way to pass the time, especially during these times!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, and business partner, Juan, definitely deserves recognition when it comes to Soft Winks’ success. Without him, I wouldn’t have been able to purse my love for beauty industry, and I definitely would not have known how to build a business from the ground up – by myself. He handles the finances, legalities – the “back-end” of the business, while I perform the services and handle the beauty and aesthetics aspect of the business. Definitely a dream team!
