We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Camacho-mckee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I tried the non-artistic career route and realized that my brain chemistry wouldn’t allow it. I couldn’t handle striving for metrics that didn’t matter. In hindsight, I can’t believe I even attempted to be in customer service! I have to do sometime creative with my life, there’s literally no other option.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have different goals for different art pieces/projects. I am proudest of the fact that I try to learn something new with each new project. Whether it is a new technique, or referencing a creature I haven’t drawn before. It’s what pushes me to add more to my own story. This has definitely not been an easy ride, but because I learn something with each new challenge, it’s worth it! I am constantly reminding myself that I don’t have to be good at everything I try at first, it’s in repetition and skill building that I can do anything I set my mind to. I want the world to know that I am tenacious, creative, and almost always ready to learn something new!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to Chino Bandidos for Mexican/Asian fusion, Bobby Q’s for my favorite barbeque, and get green tea lattes at Black Rock Cafe. I would take them to go indoor sky diving in Scottsdale, visit the Botanical Gardens in Tempe, and try ice skating in Phoenix. But after going out and doing all that around town, I would love to just hang out at home and eat ice cream.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate this shoutout to my husband, Colin, and my daughter, Merida. They are the people that I want to make proudest in my life. My husband is my biggest cheerleader. He supports my dreams and wants to help make them all a reality.
