We had the good fortune of connecting with Regina Tierney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Regina, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process has been what is true to me and what will be the outcome of this decision, is that where i want to be? The main thought behind starting my own business was creating freedom of lifestyle and choice in my life. As a artist i wanted to create something authentic to myself and my culture and use my own vision to inspire people and to create a livelihood for myself in the process. I wanted a happy life of only dealing with people who value me and my culture. This had lead me to choosing a path for my business which in the business of fashion is very off the beaten track. I have purposely avoided so called experts and business Gurus because other peoples views of what is a successful business is ultimately not my idea of what success means to me. My business did not happen through a logical plan it happened through sticking to my vision and intuition. Thankfully i have a good business and sales background as well so i balanced my artists thought process with my business mind. There was many times i thought to make Celtic Fusion Design bigger and open numerous stores or to strive to get big contracts for supplying stores internationally but when when i sat down and analysed it i realised staying online, creating smaller amounts at a higher quality, selling less but creating more new designs more often meant i could have more freedom in my life and less stress as well as doing more of what i really love which is designing and styling.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The inspiration behind my work was to create a style which felt authentic and celebrated celtic culture in a way which could be daily wearable as well as creating celtic shamanic wear for those who practice celtic ceremony. My interest in this is from my own experience of being very identified with the land and culture of where i live and my own spirituality which is embedded in the trees, earth, waters and the elements. There are many ancient sacred sites where i live in co.clare and i spend much time in these places. When you take time to really be in this land and with this ancient sense of what is sacred you really get to grips with what is real in this life. Fashion is all about creating new crazes and desires i wanted to create wearable art which was timeless and had real values. I got where i am today through dedication and hard work, 5 years of 60 hour weeks 7 days a week. I set out with the intention of making the clothing high quality but also affordable, this was a difficult mark to meet and it involved alot of reasearch and business partnerships, My quest to make the business a reality brought me to india to source materials and create a manufacture team. My wedding designs i custom create in ireland but my other designs are made in bulk so as to make them more affordable. With alot of reserch and good luck i managed to create a team who create my designs ethically in a rural town of india which is also a place of spiritual worship, the designs are hand made by skilled crafts people. i hava made lot of mistakes but as a team we learnt together over the years. My relationship with my team is very trusted and positive and over the past 7 years i have travelled to india every year to do research, source materials and develop my new designs.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to the cliffs of Moher, then to Doolin for a seafood chowder and some ceili music. We would then take a drive to the Burren national Park to see some lesser known sacred sites and holy wells such as in dysert Odea. We would a walk at Mullaghmore mountain and then finish off the day for dinner and a Guiness in Kinvarra a beautiful seaside town with a heritage Castle.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I won the Best new Business category in 2014 for a competition run by the local enterprise office in Co.Clare Ireland. The winning prize was a 20,000 euro to my business plan. This was an enormous boost for my business plan at the time as it made work achievable at a needed time. The competition involved mentoring and focus on creating a achievable plan around my Idea for the business with short term and long term goals. My business didn’t follow the plan created at the time but i did get practical skills and knowledge out of the experience. I would advice anyone starting out to see what help and assistance they have from there local Enterprise office and what government grants are available. I would also like to thank my parents for there continues support it would not have been possible without you.
