We had the good fortune of connecting with Ruth DeGroff Piñón and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ruth, why did you pursue a creative career?
I believe that art chose me. I never in a million years would have thought myself as an artisan, just never. I was into guns, watching COPS and I was on my way to being a police officer. I never saw myself doing anything else so me being here is just so incredible. I still question and wonder many many things but the one thing I do not question is how much I love creating a candle from scratch. I love being a small business owner and I love what I do! So much peace came out of being curious and now I get to do this for a living? It is just like the saying goes when adopting an animal “who rescued who?” I truly believe the same concept applies here. I stumbled into something that literally healed me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I want the world to know that there is a solution to every problem! Sure, we are human and we will never be perfect and sure, it is okey to cry every now and then but we must be aware and come out of that hole quick. It is okey to feel and accept our emotions what is not okey is to let it consume us. I am so happy and grateful for the life I have created, it has been far from easy but it has been a great teacher. What I have learned in my short time owning my business is that you have to have thick skin to let the negative people come and go. What does come and go mean? They come to you with gossip, assumptions and just negative vibes and what I have come to learn is to open the door wide open for them so they go far way from me and never come back… As a business owner you must protect your assets and your genuine intentions. There is just no time to be liked by the wrong people or to explain your ideas or circumstances.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh I would take that friend to Downtown Mesa! I absolutely love Mangos all of their food is delicious there. And then for dessert, the novel ice cream of course! I would also take that friend to any of the shows inside the Mesa Arts Center. Seriously there could be something to do in Downtown Mesa every day. Like also checking out the cute plants inside Barrel and Bloom, or going to the Old Brick Market and then maybe getting a cold tea at The Nile? and then lunch at Main St Sweets! The list goes on!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The shoutout goes to my husband – for believing in me when I couldn’t.
