We had the good fortune of connecting with Danielle Betterman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Danielle, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Better Piggies Rescue was built on the pot belly pig overpopulation problems in Arizona. After working with organizations like Ironwood Pig Sanctuary and Circle L Ranch, the need to rescue, foster, and educate was so glaring that I couldn’t avoid it. Being a person that made my career in sales and marketing, it was easy to get the business rolling and gain exposure for the cause but non-profit was something that was a little new to my world. Luckily I had amazing mentors and friends in my life that were willing to work alongside me to complete the dream.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Better Piggies Rescue is a rescue/sanctuary in Phoenix AZ dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, adoption, and education of pot belly pigs. We have over 130 rescue pigs on the property including farm hogs. We work directly with the community to ensure they know all about pigs, their health and wellness needs, and if a pig would be a good pet for their family. BPR works with organizations throughout Arizona to help rescue and place pigs; ensuring all rescues have a home and place to thrive. No day is easy and rescue life isn’t for everyone. You meet the worst people and see things that can never be unseen. But knowing and seeing the hope in a rescue animal’s eyes or seeing them finally relax after years of heartache is the reason I do what I do.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Going to the sanctuary is the most fun anyone is going to have ANYWHERE. Not only do you learn about the pigs but you also get to hang out and cuddle amazingly sweet kiddos that thrive on all the attention. We run tours every weekend because we want people to interact with these rescue pigs – it’s good for mental health and helps the pigs get rid of their social anxiety.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My father, Michael Betterman. He taught me that animals deserved to be loved and cared for and needed a voice to ensure that people don’t take advantage of them. He died 12 years ago but I know he would have loved everything about pig rescue, just like I do.
