We had the good fortune of connecting with Johnnie Purvis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Johnnie, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m Italian-Scottish and Japanese. Born and raised on the southern islands off Japan, called the Ryukyu islands or as most people know it as Okinawa.. My dad William was a U.S. Airforce military man- spent a tour in the Korean War and Vietnam war. He got stationed in Okinawa after the war and met my mom there.. being a military brat, I made a lot of friends from all ethnic backgrounds and got to travel around a bit. I grew up with no judgment or prejudice for people of all races and I think that moulded my overall perspective of not qualifying people based on skin color and ethnicity. We are all here for a purpose to fulfill on this journey.
My dad was seriously into fast cars and motorcycles and got me interested in riding motocross at a very young age. I raced for team Suzuki-Matsuda motors as a youth and ranked top three in the expert class. That passion for cars and motorcycles thrives in me today thanks to my dad.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My passion for cars, motorcycles and skydiving, inspired me to start my action sports brand called SPEED WE LUST. I sponsor motocross kids and up and coming athletes involved in action sports. I feel compelled to give back and to share a positive spark to these young people.
My life in the entertainment business as a SAG union stuntman- actor has been a long road of growth and appreciation of the creative nature of the tv and movie world. This journey is still evolving and I find it very gratifying.
I’ve lost quite a few people I love along the way of life but, my greatest lesson is when I lost my best friend and fiancé to a tragic and unexpected death in 2018. Her death truly taught me that tomorrow is promised to no one and to live life the absolute best you can and to share the most kindness to everyone and everything.
I’m building my brand to represent a life filled with freedom-facing your fears and to live truly in the moment doing what you love.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, if I were in Arizona, I’d take them skydiving at Skydive Arizona. I love the absolute professionalism at this drop zone. Truly the best and awesome views.
If I were back home in Hawaii, where I’ve spent most of my life, I’d take them surfing, swimming with sea turtles, climbing mountains to watch a moonrise or sunset. Eat at my favorite healthy restaurants like Fete in Honolulu, have a cocktail at Dukes in Waikiki and ride a motorcycle around the island.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to Wayne Dyer, and Masaru Emoto.. These gentlemen helped guide my philosophy of kindness and gratitude. We can’t take anything with us but knowledge when we leave this place- strive and thrive to be a great memory to those that knew us.
