We had the good fortune of connecting with Sabrina Betzel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabrina , do you think college made a positive impact on your life and career? Do you think it was worth the price tag?
In my case, I take college courses here and there to brush up on skills or to learn something new, but I don’t think it is for everyone. If you are 18 graduating high school and have no idea what you want to do, I would say hold off. College is a big life decision with a hefty price tag, so you should make sure you are confident and really sure in what you want to do as a career.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a Portrait Photographer at heart, but over the last year I have found a love for Landscape Photography. Arizona is absolutely beautiful and has so much to explore. I have dreams to travel the world and become a Travel Photographer, while of course taking Portraits of people around the world. I am excited about the future of Betzel Creative and to see where the rest of 2020 and beyond takes me! Nothing worth having comes easy, some days are a struggle and others are blissful and easy. Life is about balance and so is business. Over the years, I have learned that family and friends can be a great support system, but sometimes going into business with them can be tricky. You have to learn to keep those relationship and work boundaries clear or things can get messy. An important lesson to learn in business and also life is that you’re not everyone’s cup of tea. Not everyone is going to like you or like your style. Everyone has opinions and in this day and age of social media you will probably hear about that in the comments of your Instagram/Facebook/Website. I learned this lesson early on in my business when I had a client that after I delivered photos didn’t like my editing style. She was looking for more moody and dark, my brand is vibrant but true to color. I was completely opposite of what she wanted. The Betzel Creative brand is all about capturing your authentic self. I keep editing simple: color correction, spot removal (pet hair haha), and minor changes. I don’t want to airbrush someone into something that they don’t recognize when they look in the mirror. Lifestyle Photography is some of the most fun because it is all about the person in their home and natural environment. It’s about dancing in the kitchen with your husband or reading a story to your little one. All authentically you!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Great question! I do love my Tempe bubble so a few of my favorite spots are Scramble, a fun breakfast and brunch spot. They have Gluten Free, Vegan, and Vegetarian options so there is a little something for everyone! Another one of my favorites is The Porch which is a cute little restaurant that has Instagram-worthy drinks and tire swings and games on the patio. A day trip to Sedona to see the red rocks is of course on the list! Spring in Arizona is the most beautiful because of all of the wildflowers so I would definitely take them hiking around the valley.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I first decided to start my business I was lost on pricing, how to get clients, editing, and really just everything. I was lucky enough that my sister had a friend from college that was already running her own successful photography business, so I reached out asking for guidance. Mary from Merry Character Photography has been an absolute blessing to me and my business! She has been there every time I had a questions or doubts and has helped me grow immensely. Another person that has helped me grow is JoAnna with JoAnna DeLuna Photography. We mutually followed each other on Instagram a few years ago and became friends. She has done my head shots over the last year and we have even bought each others landscape prints! Creatives supporting creatives! She has encouraged me, pushed me, and helped me build the Betzel Creative brand. She is always there to answer my questions or send a funny encouraging meme. Of course family has been my biggest support, always checking in and being my models when I want to test out something new. I wouldn’t be here without them.
