We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Ohanesian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sam, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
One of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever made was to leave my career as an air traffic controller and start my journey as an entrepreneur. I began my career as an air traffic controller in the United States Air Force and continued as a civilian in the Federal Aviation Administration. It was a well paying, stable and secure job. There were many reasons why I decided to leave but it was a risky and stressful decision to leave such a stable career. Family and friends on the outside looking in were confused and questioned my decision. Looking back at my decision now, I am very glad I had the confidence to go through with it. It forced me into a “sink or swim” mentality and motivated me to give it my all as an entrepreneur. If I had not left my career, I would not have made the investments I made or taken the growth opportunities I took and I would not be where I am today.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own and manage 20 units of real estate and I own Cline Tactical, a firearms customization business located in Tucson, AZ. I think what sets Cline Tactical apart from others is customer satisfaction and customer engagement. As a small business, we communicate with every customer and make sure every small detail of their order is done to their satisfaction. I regularly follow up with customers to ensure their experience was satisfactory.
I got to where I am today with hard work, consistency and taking calculated risks. As an entrepreneur, there’s no such thing as a set schedule. There were many times that I was at a rental property late at night prepping for a new tenant to move in, while taking a few minutes to eat dinner on the floor. Or coming in on a day the business is closed to ship out a firearm so the customer get it a little sooner. Owning a business is definitely not easy, but to some it’s worth it.
I’ve had many challenges in my journey and I know there will be more in the future. Understanding there are going to be challenges is important. I have learned from past mistakes and built confidence in my ability to navigate new challenges.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Tucson is a great city with lots of things to do. A hike around Sabino Canyon would definitely be on the to-do-list. Then lunch at La Chaiteria would be a must do. A relaxing walk around the Sam Hughes neighborhood would be next. If they are up for it, I’d take them to Mako Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after that (come see me Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:30 for a class!) Then for dinner it would be a toss up between Nates Italian Kitchen and Med Cuisine.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are many people and organizations that helped me along the way. First person I would like to thank is my fiancé, Alexandra Cappelli. She encouraged and supported me throughout the whole process. There were many times that I threw my hands in the air and wanted to give up and she pushed me through those moments of frustration and stress. I wouldn’t be where I am without her help. My mother, Denise Ohanesian, was also a huge support for me, not just in my business ventures but in life. Even though she lives far away, the phone calls with words of encouragement and advice helped me get through tough times.
As far as organizations go, I’d like to thank BiggerPockets. They are a wealth of investing and business information. Any time I was in my truck over the last 4 or 5 years, there’s a very good chance I was listening to the BiggerPockets podcast.
