Meet Sarah Neumann | Dermatology Physician Assistant & practice owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Neumann, PA and founder of Ahwatukee Skin & Laser and Sun City Dermatology, and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
That’s such a great question. I worked for a large group practice for many years, where I saw patients being treated like numbers. I wanted to create a more personalized and unique approach to patient care. Quite frankly, I wanted to do it my way, which was both heartfelt and relationship driven. I made the leap of faith in 2010 and opened Ahwatukee Skin & Laser in Phoenix, followed by my Sun City West location in 2018, on my own but with the support of an incredible group of award-winning physicians.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been a practicing dermatology physician assistant (PA) for the past 21 years. I first got interested in dermatology, one, because I had very bad acne as a teenager, and two, after I worked as an exchange student in Belize in Central America. Working with patients in Belize is where my love of dermatology truly exploded.

When I first started in my field, it was unheard of for a PA to open and run a practice. I think much of my success today is due to my Midwestern roots.

Growing up in a small rural community in Wisconsin, I learned the value of a dollar very early on and formulated a work ethic for myself that has never failed me. Hard work and a commitment to providing the best care possible has been my mission from day one. It all comes down to treating others how you would like to be treated and building a team who shares those values.

Of course, I could never have done any of this without my amazing staff and the support of the community. My office tries to give back at every turn and I regularly make homemade healthy meals for patients in need, support local school events and am present in the community.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Wow, where do I begin? Arizona has so many adventures to offer. My favorite spots are currently in central Phoenix with its local Gastro pubs and small eateries. Of course, I would also have to take them for a ride around the Valley on my motorcycle. But my real happy place is Strawberry, Arizona, with its tall Pines, cool breezes and fun small town feel and great local restaurants. This is my home away from home.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am truly grateful to the dedicated thousands of patients who have believed in me through the years, to my staff who always give 110% and to my exceptional providers. They have stood by me through the ups & downs of healthcare, a global pandemic, and even personal health struggles. There are so many to credit, thank and recognize, but that’s a start.
