We had the good fortune of connecting with Shawnte Fleming and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shawnte, how does your business help the community?
We are entering a new phase in the organizations growth. Our vision is to promote community-based philanthropy for underrepresented and disenfranchised communities, individuals, and families. With the assistance of our volunteers, community partners, corporate sponsors, and community, we hope to empower those individuals currently struggling to speak up and seek correction in unjust situations. Pay it forward by advocating for others in similar situations. Let Us Breathe continues to build community and bring people together.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am the baby of 5 children. My mother is an entrepreneur of over 40 years. I am currently a bails bond agent for Bad Boy Bail Bonds in Abilene TX. Also I am a private investigator, these are predominantly male trades. As a woman of color these can be challenging especially living in west Texas. Some of the lessons I have learned is never let obstacles stop you from completing a task. It’s not about how you start…it’s all in the finish. We started Let Us Breathe Abilene in 2020 and we and endured many hurdles but we jump them one at time or we knock them over and continue with the race through advocacy, empowerment and justice.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some of my favorite spots in our great city is Nora Hall. Nora Hall is manage by Tanell Smith and she host “That’s my DJ” night you can find the best music in the city there and the vibe is everything. It’s on Cypress Street so it right next to my other favorite place The Local. The local is a restaurant downtown and it’s the most upbeat diverse spot you will see. From old to young, multi-racial groups of people everyone is welcome. The food and drinks are great but the energy is A-1. The staff are always nice and the owner, Alex is so sweet.
The Contemporary Arts center is in the same block so definitely would stop by and show off Abilene’s talent.
The Curtis House. This is such a cool house under the ICANN organization and managed by Andrew Penns he gives the best tour and he knows all of Abilene’s black history. It’s vouch a wonderful experience going to the Curtis House I want everyone to experience it at least once.
The mill- the mill is located in the SOdA district in Abilene it’s a winery but it’s beautiful. Sometimes when they host the band Basic Truth that’s my favorite night. It’s lovely
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
