We had the good fortune of connecting with Sheena Hyena and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sheena, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Mental health is important to me. After many attempts at jobs, or career paths. I never found my place. This has given me an opportunity to connect with everyone around me through creativity.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I don’t believe anything sets me apart from others, in that all humans are capable of making a world better for themselves and others. Adding bits of creativity, in the fashion we choose. If I had a style, it would be colorful, while also realistic. I like to think Lisa Frank would be a fan, as I’ve been hers since a kid! I have worked daily, to get better, That sounds obsessive, and it is. I have a sketchbook with me every vacation, working on procreate during breaks of any movie or show on. I find it hard to delve into hobbies as I’m in a world of my own imagination. I’ve used art as a way to focus on mental health in times of personal trial. I shut out the world, and allow myself to be alone with the emotions to paint them out. I want others to feel inspired themselves when they see art they connect with. We need the odd, and weird in our world.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
South Mountain for an early start hiking, Allow ourselves to breath in the air, and stare over the horizon of our vastly expanding city. We would take in local spots, like Tempe Yucca Tap Room for live music, and the arts district downtown for our best local artists. Pieces on 16th for art supplies, and maybe get tattoos with some local shop.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Jeffrey Robens Jr, he suggested me for an event in 2015 and it changed my life. He’s been in the music scene locally for as many years as I can remember.. He’s given a hand to many in the valley. He deserves his own recognition.

Danielle, for being my little duck and best forever friend. I won’t ever create a piece without her in the process emotionally. Miss you everyday.
