We had the good fortune of connecting with Shira Panitch and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shira, how does your business help the community?
Glow & Grow is committed to sustainable entrepreneurship. We are an interior and patio plant design business on a mission to improve access to plants across the Valley.

We know that plants not only boost air quality but are imperative to creating microclimates and shade during the heat of the summer in the Sonoran Desert. We are experts in the native Arizona climate and only plant desert-adapted and native species outdoors. Our sustainable practices contribute to the growth of the desert biome and shade equity in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area.

Plants, both indoors and out, can contribute to higher levels of serotonin and lower levels of anxiety and depression. We keep our prices low so everyone, from students to seniors can enjoy our services.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
It all begins with an idea. Imagine something greener, calmer, and greater than what you have. Glow & Grow transforms ordinary spaces into extraordinary experiences.

We are an interior plant and patio design company that consults with each client to learn their style, budget, and lighting before drafting a design proposal. Our designs are restorative, peaceful, and evocative. We are proficient in both outdoor desert native and adapted species and indoor aroids, epiphytes, and specialty varieties.

We are a relatively new business and want others to know about our services. We offer full design and build plans, ongoing plant care subscriptions, virtual and in-person plant consultations, and nursery shopping dates.

We have reached this point through advertising, attending networking events, cold-calling businesses, and attending business fairs.

I believe one of the biggest and fastest lessons you learn when attempting to start a business is to have no shame, no pride. If you have pride you will not lift off the ground because there are always people further along whom you have to appease. If you have shame you will not be able to pick yourself back up when you fall. And you will fall.

We want people to know we are committed to pleasing our customers 100% of the time. Plants are our specialty and if something dies under our care or does not look up to par, we will replace the plant or refund you the cost.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have not even lived here for a full year so I think there are many things I am still unaware of! However, I know I would take them to Historic Grand Ave for some great vegan eats (Earth Vegan Eatery and Cha Cha’s Tea) and some fun local shopping. I absolutely love the way the trees are decorated there too!

For a fancy dinner or brunch, we might go to Wrigley Mansion and enjoy the beautiful gardens and foliage. They have an excellent menu and will accommodate all dietary requests, including vegan and gluten-free!

I would love to take my visitors to the Desert Botanical Gardens to show them the depth and beauty of our desert-adapted and native flora. The Gardens make a stunning effort to preserve and enhance the natural landscape through sustainable usage of water and planting techniques.

And for a night out we could go to The Churchill, Endgame Bar, or Cobra Arcade Bar, all bars with excellent entertainment and/or food. The Churchill does many local and community pop-ups and vegan Thursdays every week! Endgame and Cobra are both “barcades”– super fun places to hang out if you haven’t yet!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My partner in life and business, Ethan, has helped me every step of the way. Together we decided to begin a business and I rely on him daily for his advice, truthfulness, and guidance.

He is a forester and will soon become an ISA Certified Arborist so he can administer and expand the outdoor services we provide. He is also in graduate school like myself and getting a landscape specialist certificate from a nationally recognized program in the horticulture and landscape design industry.

When I began this endeavor I knew I would have little time for anything outside my business. And while this remains true, the time I get to spend with Ethan when we aren’t talking about the business is my most treasured time.
