We had the good fortune of connecting with Sonia Montenegro and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sonia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have always dreamt of owning my own business, the idea of pursuing what you love and making a living from it is both exciting and terrifying at the same time. Unfortunately for me, the fear held me back for years from actually taking that leap. The unknown is not something I’ve been been comfortable in facing, that is until I met my now boyfriend of 10 years who battled addiction for the majority of our relationship, and 2 years ago when my twin sister was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Up until those life changing experiences, I have always colored inside the lines, I played it safe. I cared deeply what others thought and/or said about me. I settled. After seeing my boyfriend and sister fight for their lives something changed within me. My outlook on life changed and my perspective shifted. Life is incredibly short to settle, to allow fear to keep you from acheiving your true potential, and let time to drift you idly. The unknown is where we inevitably grow and learn to conquer our fears. That being said, I took the biggest risk of my life and quit my comfortable job in Las Vegas, packed up all of my belongings and moved to Arizona, and have invested all of my time and money into Microblading. I am not near where I want to be since I am just starting out, but I know I’m headed in the right direction because I have started and invested in myself. As for my loved ones, my boyfriend is now sober and my sister is currently in remission.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Cosmetic Tattooing is not easy by any means. It’s truly an art form that is interpreted differently from artist to artist. When I was in high school I was bullied for not looking a certain way or fit into certain groups. It sort of stuck with me for most of my young adult life. I’ve always told myself that whatever it is that I do in life I want to make people feel good about themselves. With permanent makeup, I can help people achieve just that by enhancing their natural features. When a client looks at their results after their service is complete is what excites me. Their smiles at their own reflection, that’s what motivates me to be better and to keep going. It may just be brows to someone, but it’s an inner confidence to someone else. Confidence is what I want my brand to be about when people leave my chair.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am still fairly new to Arizona and haven’t had the opportunity to explore much. However, I LOVE a good cold brew and Diego pops had an unreal horchata cold brew that I think about almost daily. Downtown Phoenix has a brewery called Arizona Wilderness which has really great food and apparently carry the best cider in the world. Tried it, and it is. Also, I have two small pomeranians that I am super codependent on more than they are of me, and near Old Town Scottsdale they have a restaurant named Farm & Craft that I can not only bring them, but they can have a dog bowl that’s on the menu. And if you’re really trying to impress someone, take them to Sumo Maya or Toca Madera. Both places will make you see food as art. Can’t wait to eventually discover more!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family and my boyfriend are really supportive of me. They encourage me when I doubt myself, which happens from time to time. I get inspired by all the successful Microblading artists I see online. Seeing their clean work and their crisp content inspires me. They all started out just like me. Some worked out of their spare room in their home barely taking clients, and now have a thriving studio and are fully booked out months in advance. What they all have in common is practice and consistency. There is also a quote that I reference back to on occasion when I need inspiration: “If the average person realized the power he wields over his life and destiny, he would live in a perpetual state of wonder and thanksgiving.” Earl Nightingale.
