We had the good fortune of connecting with Sophia Hobley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sophia, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
I do not believe anyone should ever give up. Most of the time when people give up, either they have given up too soon or have given up on searching for new ways to keep going. Feeling like giving up happens to all of us and often. There is always a way out or around this feeling, you just have to seek out a different direction. Always surround yourself with people who lift and inspire you and never forget the passion and flame that was once felt before the endeavor started.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am most excited about finally graduating this year. I began school back in 2016 but have continued to work full-time as a graphic designer. Working full-time and finding classes to fit my schedule has been tough and made my pursuit of a degree a long one. Many times, I felt discouraged, but while working on projects and assignments I realized how much I just purely enjoyed spending time on designing. That is why I started my business Sophia Rachelle Designs in 2018. Even though I wound up only being able to take one class I continued to fill my time with small side projects to keep my passion alive as well as continue to grow and learn in my field. Overall, I think it is important to enjoy what you do and even when times get tough or discouraging find new ways to keep the goal in mind.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I would have to definitely take them to Taliesin West. You don’t have to have a love for architecture or design to enjoy the history and beauty of this home. Another place I would take them is Cosanti, a community that really ignites the imagination and provides an adventure of learning through architecture. For relaxation, I would take them to Sedona. I tell all my friends and family that if they haven’t been to Sedona, you are truly missing out on the beauty of nature, and also art! For drinks we would go to Melinda’s Speakeasy downtown. They have the best cocktails!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
For me, it is hard to give a shout out to one person. I have been blessed to meet many extraordinary people who have always kept me motivated and excited to pursue my career. When I worked for the military, I had the exposure to not only structure and discipline but also many walks of life from throughout the world. Being from a very small town in Indiana, the military expanded my horizon and opened many opportunities to discover who I really wanted to become as a young professional. One of those opportunities was being lucky enough to work in the same office with the Interior Designer for all the West Region’s military bases. Her name was Eve. At that time, I was only working administration but always found some time to stop by her office and chat space plans, fabrics, colors, and designs. She even would invite me to shadow her on some projects. I believe my decision to leave the military, move states, and go back to school for a degree in Interior Design began with her planting the seed of following what I am truly passionate about. Unfortunately, she passed a few years ago, but I look back and wonder if she wouldn’t have taken that time to encourage and support me, would I be where I am at today.
