We had the good fortune of connecting with Steven Alexander and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Steven, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my own business because I saw a need in the market. I have always been the lead physical therapist/manager of these mill-like clinics that have you see 2-4 patients in an hour. It was so frustrating to be providing care to a patient for 10 minutes and sending them off to work with a physical therapy technician who we may have just hired straight from high school and they have no exercise background. I remember seeing the look of despair when I would be working with a patient and seeing one of my other patients who was currently in the clinic just sitting in the corner waiting for the technician, who is working with 6 people themselves, to tell them their next exercise to do. I can also recall times where the patients would be providing the feedback about exercises hurting or not feeling comfortable, but a technician does not have the skill set to be able to change the game plan for the day. I decided to work with the active adults because my prior clinics I have worked at marketed to athletes and adults for rehab, but the strongest weights they had were a 5 pound dumbbell and a blue elastic band. How can we feel good about ourselves telling a patient who is recovering from an ACL surgery that they are good to return to sports when they have only lifted a 5 pound dumbbell? Or tell a mom that they are good to lift their 30 pound toddler even though we have only lifted with the blue theraband. There was a very big need in the market and I opened my clinic looking to fill that need.

What should our readers know about your business?
I saw a need in the market to treat active adults and athletes in a way they should be treated, by actually using strength and conditioning principles to get them ready to return to their active lives and sports. I knew this population was sitting there scratching their heads realizing that they were just crushing the ball off the tee over the weekend for 275+ yards, developed some shoulder discomfort, and were sitting in a clinic doing the same exercises as everyone else who was at the clinic for back pain. I knew people who valued their health and time would really be encouraged to seek the treatment from a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy for the entirety of their session. There are not many fields in healthcare that allows you to see the professional in their field for that long. As far as the business, it has come a long way with lots of bumps in the road. When I first opened up, I thought putting my name on a door and a shirt and hitting up the gyms would be my marketing plan. That is barely enough to get you going. I have learned a whole lot more about business since I first opened my doors. It has been quite a ride over the past 3 years. One thing I have realized being a healthcare professional is that I spent 7 years going to school to perfect my craft. Why do I think I will be successful opening a business? It is not easy. I have learned that I need to put as much effort into learning how to run a business as I did perfecting my craft as a clinician. Now the real fun begins as I continue to bring on staff to continue to grow my mission and vision. One thing I will caution people who would like to hire us for our services, we ARE NOT FOR EVERYONE. We only accept patients who value their health and want to continue to stay active and return to their active lives/sports. We don’t spend your hour with us having you sit on a heat pack or ride a bike. We use the sound principles of strength and conditioning, as well as tissue healing, and get you back to moving better and more confident than before your injury.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people I could give a shoutout to for helping me get to where I am today. I guess, first, I want to thank prior employers who gave me the opportunity to learn more about myself while giving care to their patients. Secondly, I have a friend from physical therapy school who started his own physical therapy business in his hometown based on the same principles and beliefs I have for mine. He has shown me the way and made it easier for me by answering any questions I had about the business. The list can go on and on but I will keep it short and simple.
