We had the good fortune of connecting with Sukie Silveira and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sukie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
In my home country of South Korea I started working in a clothing factory when I was 13. Over the next years I learned every aspect of how to make custom clothes. When I was 19, I opened a custom clothing shop where I created custom clothing for women and men. I operated my shop for many years until I met my husband and moved to the US. Once in the states, my desire was to continue my business but due to my husband’s job we moved many times. In 1997 we settled in Arizona and finally in 2001 I was able to open a clothing alteration shop in Peoria Arizona. I was there for many years and ultimately moved my location to Goodyear Arizona. This year marked my 26th year of my business.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As I mentioned before I started when I was 13. I have spent my life sewing clothing, over 50 years. As a Asian woman I am proud of where I came from, the success I achieved and where I am today. I appreciate both my birth country of South Korea and my home country of the USA. Yes the road to get here was hard but nothing in life comes easy. I set my goals early on in my life, I worked hard and nurtured them and persevered until I was able to make them come true. Over the years I have learned that no one is going to do it for you. If you truly want to be successful, in whatever your career, then it is up to you to make that happen.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As a successful business woman I first want thank my family for their support. As any business owner knows, when you first start your business there is always a lot of sacrifice needed. My family was wonderful in supporting me and always encouraged me. I also want to thank my mentor who taught me the skills I have today. From that clothing factory along time ago in Korea to my business I have today in Goodyear, the training and skills I received early on helped push me to be successful.
