We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydnee Rivera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sydnee, what do you love most about your work?
A little secret about me is that I’m very much an introvert. I love meeting new people and having good conversations in small settings but I also love my alone time. Sometimes it can be hard to get myself out if I’m cozy in my own environment. I love what I do because not only does it allow me to use both sides of my brain, it also pushes me to spend quality time with and become close to my clients. They become friends and I love hearing about their lives… the good and bad, and being able to be there for them.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have a huge belief in the power of feeling like your best self. For some that is full glam and for some it is minimalist beauty. My aesthetic very much leans toward the more natural side of glam. Don’t get me wrong I adore a smoked out eye and big, voluminous hair but I always like to bring it back to what makes you, YOU. A smokey eye doesn’t have to be black, it can be light to medium brown and can make you feel like yourself and like an absolute goddess at the same time. Hair can be big and bouncy but just imperfect enough to feel like it’s not overdone. I just love the idea of people loving themselves and not feeling like they need to look like a different person to do that. This awareness didn’t come easy to me at first. It’s very easy in this industry to feel pressure to do what everyone else is doing. Most of the time that pressure comes from ourselves. We are surrounded by beauty and amazing work and sometimes it’s hard to figure out where you fit in and what you’re niche is. Sometimes that can make you question If you really have a place in the industry. Don’t give up! Once you figure it out you will do amazing things. My advice is to try a little of everything until you figure out what sparks passion in you. Once you find that passion (and you’ve built an impeccable foundation) you can’t be stopped. Speaking of building a strong foundation, I cannot stress enough how much I recommend assisting and finding someone to mentor you. I’ve worked with amazing stylists in the past who have taught me so much. I’ve also learned so much since working with Heather Van Houten Makeup & Hair. Training with everyone I’ve been able to has taken me from “doing” hair and makeup to being a true professional and becoming an artist.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First thing would be taking a little drive to Sedona. The town is amazing and has gorgeous views, great restaurants and is such a great place if you’re into the Metaphysical as I am. In the Phoenix area I adore Dark Hall Coffee and Flower Child. In Tucson you can catch me at Decibel Coffee or Che’s Lounge.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a huge shoutout to my mom, Tammy, for always supporting me and truly making me believe that I can do anything I want to. She has trusted my vision of how I want my life to be and has pushed me to make it happen. She’s the most selfless and loving woman and I’ve always been so lucky to be loved for who I am and to not be afraid of having big dreams. Love you Mom!!
