We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydney King and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sydney, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I always knew I needed to make a huge impact on the world. I knew if I wanted to help people on a large scale, it required me to be passionate about what I was doing and scale my efforts to the max. It’s a funny story about how I started SydShakes, because it was originally to help myself. Let this be your sign to focus on yourself before you try to focus on the world.
I began SydShakes (without even knowing it was going to be “SydShakes”) in 2020 when I began modeling. I started modeling in Tucson, Arizona which quickly expanded to Phoenix, Arizona. With efforts of building my portfolio and growing my connections, I was on the go all the time. Driving back and forth from Tucson to Phoenix in the same day, some days beginning at 4 in the morning to make it there by sunrise. After doing this for a few months, I realized I was forgetting to eat. I trained my body to not get hungry and I was burning much more energy than I was taking in. My parents then started to notice my dramatic weight loss and even told me that my chest looked thin, I was losing muscle, and it was apparent that I was neglecting my health. This is where I chose to step in.
Shortly after, I began to think “What can I have daily that will be quick, enjoyable, and help me get all my nutrients in?” Then I thought, protein shakes – when I had never really even made a smoothie in my life before this. I immediately began to search for a plant-based protein (I have problems with dairy and was heading toward plant-based living anyway), and I started mixing up different recipes. I began drinking these daily and noticed the taste was delicious, unlike other protein shakes I’ve tried in the past. I also invested in a trainer that helped me build muscle while consistently drinking these shakes, and this is when I began to truly see incredible results.
When I realized I had unlocked the key to solving my own health problem, AND it was enjoyable – that is when I realized I can help other people that maybe they had the same problem. I believed it was rare to find something that was healthy, tasty, and can help you reach your health goals if you stayed consistent. I asked close friends and family to test it, got some feedback, adjusted, and launched soon after.
The rest is history!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The most artistic thing I am involved in I would say is my modeling. Modeling is such an amazing way to express yourself and it will always hold a close and special place in my heart. Modeling is such a huge part of my journey and I still to this day think it is so beautiful how one photo can speak 1,000 words. I put forth my maximum efforts in my modeling jobs to create a great experience for myself and all parties involved. Additionally I always make sure to be in my element, style myself correctly, and own the camera. I truly love it!
I believe I got to where I am today professionally by just putting myself out there. You have to sell who you are to get to where you want to be. Nobody will do it like you. I put the majority of my efforts in expanding my connections and collaborating with other creatives, as well as taking up opportunities as they come. The modeling industry is small in AZ, so in due time the people who are meant to know each other, will.
I wouldn’t describe the journey as easy, but I would describe it as worth it. I am grateful for all the relationships I have gained out of it and am excited to see what the future holds. I believe I overcame any challenges by just believing in myself and making it work regardless of the circumstance.
The greatest decision to ever make in any journey is to just start.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend of mine was visiting Arizona, I would show them the beautiful scenery and go on a hike, go shopping at thrift stores, take them to small business popups, and local concerts / artistry events. We’d eat all types of food as Tucson specifically is a big foodie town, and just explore.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I will dedicate my shoutout in this series to everyone who believed in me from the very beginning. My mentors, my family, my real friends, and even my followers. You all kept me going while I was finding myself and figuring out how I was going to make the impact I make today and will continue to make on an even larger scale in the future. You all never go unnoticed. Thank you!
