We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydney Stewart and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sydney, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I always knew that one day I would own my own business. From a little girl I dreamed of always opening up a dance related business that would be all inclusive and allow people of many different backgrounds to have access to have a safe place. When I finally got the opportunity to open my business I jumped at the opportunity. I realized early on that it would be challenging to own an inventory based business, but I knew I had to come up with unique products that was nothing like anything else I had seen before at similar dance and gymnastics stores. I wanted products to cater to not only the “ideal” or “standard” dancer or gymnast, but rather the unconventional one. With this motivation, I started researching products that were needed in the industries and got to work on how I would make them available. I’m thankful for the opportunity to be able to allow all people the opportunity to feel comfortable in their skin when wanting to engage in dance, gymnastics, or a similar activity.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I had the opportunity to graduate from Arizona State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering with a minor in dance. My first job out of college was a Transportation Supervisor at PepsiCo where I endured long hours and worked with people, mostly men, two to three times my age. It was a difficult path, but an experience I wouldn’t trade for the world. It made me stronger to be able to persevere through crazy hours, dealing with different personalities, and getting a taste of corporate america for the first time. Now, I have had the opportunity to switch positions twice and I am now an analyst with more reasonable hours and work corresponding closer to my degree. These positions have also allowed me to perseverance to work through difficult problems in my life. For those out there struggling with their current positions; know that your time in that hardship is temporary and you will only grow stronger through your adversities.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Arizona has so much to offer and so many great things to see, but I have to say the food is definitely my favorite part of the state. The three best places I would recommend, which I have taken my own family to, would be Lolo’s Chicken & Waffles (Scottsdale being my favorite location), Angry Crab (Mesa), and Biscuits (Mesa location). Also for quick bites to eat, ATL Wings and Canes of course. I also would stay Scottsdale Mall and Scottsdale quarters are two must see locations during their visit. I’m also bias since I went there, but the campus of Arizona State University is one of the most impressive campuses. Walking through campus and visiting Palm Walk and all of the new buildings on campus are a must see.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My main inspiration for starting my business was my husband, Dominique Stewart. He was the one that helped me with all things related to the business. He was always ready to help pick up items, open a new account at the bank, figure out how to file taxes and much much more. He never doubted that I would be a great business owner and supported me with my dream even when it wasn’t making money or felt like we had gone down the wrong path. I also have to take the time to shout out Kara J White, my sorority sister and dance coach. She has been such an inspiration to me starting Live Love Dance Inc. and always striving for the things she has wanted in life. Having someone to model a business after and support you makes such a difference! I’m thankful to all my customers that have stuck with me and given great suggestions and advice along the way.
