Meet Talia Ortiz | Cow Skull Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Talia Ortiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Talia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started to get into the world of art when I was younger. For a while, I stopped doing it, And during that time I started to suffer with anxiety. One day at a friend’s house, she had a cow skull laying around and she told me to paint on it. While painting, I was so focused and was distracted from feeling anxious. As I started to create more art on cow skulls, people started to notice. Then, I got asked by multiple people for custom skulls. I created my business, and the rest is history.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a huge supporter of anxiety and mental health and being able to have a creative outlet is extremely important. I am incredibly proud that in the hardest year for not only myself, but for many individuals that I was able to start a successful business. I would say the best part about being a new business owner is navigating and learning how to be one. Being able to witness people’s reactions gives me immense joy.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would tell them to start in my hometown of cave creek/ carefree. The small businesses and stores are so unique, you’re sure to find something special. Janey’s coffee co. & bodega is perfect for wine and a cheese board and to listen to live music. Another laid back place is Local Johnnys no too far from Janey’s. Desert treasures is a must if you’re into stones. Sage, fossils, and jewelry. Their prices can’t be beat, and you will always find something to take home. Harold’s and Buffalo Chip are two authentic western bars that always have something going on. Buffalo chip has bull riding and swing dancing so if you are from out of town this is the place to go!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wanted to start by thanking my family and friends, for standing by my side through all the ups and downs and navigating what comes with starting a business. I also wanted to thank them for their support and for always catching me when I fall.
