We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor (TayBae) Van Slett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taylor (TayBae), what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Art has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I was given free reign to express myself as a child. As I grew older, I began developing different artistic talents that allowed me to help others express themselves- whether that was what they saw through one of my paintings, bringing their brand to life by helping them with logo design, or simply reflecting their own beauty back at them through photography. The look on someone’s face when my work lights up their own imagination is why I continue to pursue an artistic career.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I got to where I am professionally after about ten years of constantly creating and forming the world in which my art lives. Whether that be color selection with subject matter for painting or angles and color grading with photography- my personal style has evolved and people know my work when they see it. It wasn’t an easy process- it took years before I saw a dollar for any of my work. I believe my clients want to escape into the world I’ve created for my paintings and photography to exist and that is why people keep coming back.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would start the day off with my favorite coffee from Bosa Donuts, followed by a walk in Margaret T. Hance Park. We would then swing by the Pemberton for a light lunch, hit up Dig It Gardens for some unique plant finds, go to Wang’s Vintage & Trill PHX for shopping vintage & streetwear, sit down for some amazing Sushi at Moira downtown, and end the night at Gracie’s Tax Bar for some great drinks and awesome atmosphere.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out my beautiful mother Alice, who taught me to never stop dreaming and always fight for what I want in life.
