Meet Tony Demaio | Tattoo artist better known as Tony Tat

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tony Demaio and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tony, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Most outsiders to the tattoo industry probably think that only the usual stereotypes of bikers and women of ill repute get tattooed. What they don’t know that is over 70% of our clients are professional. Doctors, teachers, lawyers, priests, police and fire personnel. Tattoos are no longer kept under wraps and have really become an expression of one’s self.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been tattooing for over 30 years. I work in all styles of tattooing but I’m probably best know for my gray wash and portraits. I also enjoy Japanese a lot. I definitely consider myself an old school artist. Our shop caters to clients and we pride ourselves on how closely we work with our clients to design a tattoo they love

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First stop would be our shop, everyone has time for ink. We live about 30 minutes from NYC so we would definitely head there to take in dinner and a drag show at Lips.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
That would be my wife and partner in the shop, Kathy. She was instrumental in opening our shop. She found the location, came up with the name and designed the interior.
