We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonel ‘JoJo’ Cera and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jonel ‘JoJo’, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risks are challenges that make you stronger. Taking risks is part of the process to make you an empowered, courageous, and over-achiever being. For me – taking risks have given me the chance to explore myself. I wanted to understand and educate myself on the things that I am interested in, such as fashion, and how I can use that subject to change peoples perspective on everyday life. We live in times were every single being on this planet has an opinion and judgment. I wanted to risk my fashion and play with both female and male fashion trends to get the point across that it is okay to explore and shut down social trends. Taking risks have changed my life! I recommend you do too! Risks are just a chance to become a stronger version of yourself.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I moved to Phoenix, Arizona, I was employed with Abercrombie & Fitch. I had so much fun being a manager for them, helping new team members succeed, and even open new locations! I had the privilege to visit their home office in Ohio were I had an epiphany that I wanted to do more than just be a team member at one of their thousands of locations. As time went by, I decided it was time for me to take a risk and explore! I found an awesome consignment boutique, due to a close friend and role model of mine, in Scottsdale, Arizona were I immediately knew I had to work there. The owner – gave me such an inspiring image of being and embracing the person I want to be. She is a rockstar that breaks fashion rules and owns them that, everywhere she walks in, she steals the spotlight. I learned how to walk away from the ‘normal’ fashion trends and start my own. With the job, new callings, emotions, risks, and growth, were part of this chapter. After deciding it was time to move on to the next chapter in my life – I knew that whatever life had ready for JoJo I was ready to take it and run with it.

Today, I work as a digital sales advisor for the company Neiman Marcus. I ended here due to a connection I had at the time of my employment with this great group. Neiman Marcus and staff members of my location in Scottsdale – have been very welcoming, fun to work with, always open for growth, and most importantly – we celebrate each others wins! As any job out there, starting a new position is challenging. At the Neiman Marcus Group, everyone is so open to help in result to make you a better asset to the team. I am here today, enjoying my job, meeting amazing people on the daily. Some clients of mine are corporate workers, celebrities, talent managers, tv personalities, and more! Working here will definitely give me a bigger platform and network for my next step in life.

Now, I am a guy that enjoys makeup, heels, leather pants, and doesn’t give importance to what people have to say. I am who I am and I’m happy with that! A lesson I learned throughout the way is that people will ALWAYS have something to say. Whether you arr doing good or bad, an opinion will always be present. The lesson here is to remind yourself you are much stronger – we only have one life so better ,are the best out of it! Take risks! ‘No’ is not an answer, it’s an opportunity!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Such a hard question! So many places we need to see, visit, and eat at!

I want to say that in my time living in Arizona you can find anything from a very relaxed environment to the most hardcore parties you can attend! We would definitely have to catch drinks at AZ/88. Their Mojitos and Espresso Martinis are something everyone needs to try. As for food – we need to make a stop at Toca Madera for their awesome margaritas and filet mignon, Maple & Ash for the cool desserts, and Taco boys for the best carne asada tacos and horchata you can have.

Part of coming to Arizona is going to the surrounding cities such as Flagstaff and visit the lakes out in Apache Junction. In the morning we can get coffee at Lola coffee bar or matcha at Deseo coffee shop. At night we can attend Charlies Phoenix, were I have met incredible people part of the LGBT community, Sazerac Bar in downtown, Lucky’s for a nice cold beer, or enjoy private parties around town.

I would definitely enjoy taking my friends a little up north at night to take a look at the incredible star show. I enjoy small things and cheesy acts!

Definitely recommend to download the app YELP to find the best restaurants, shops, and more!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I believe that we all have a person or organization that we came across and realized we could do it too. I want to dedicate my shoutout to many different people in my life. First and for most, my beautiful mother that has been with me through every stage in my life and has accepted me for the person I am. She has also been my biggest supporter since day 1. My father who is routing for me from Heaven – thank you for allowing me to express my self differently than everyone else and had given me the best life! I’d like to shoutout my best friend who has embraced my soul and has always been my most honest and loyal image since we decided we wanted to do something different with our lives. I am eternally grateful to a higher power that placed my best friend in my path. My friends from Mexicali, Mexico who were the first people to learn about my interests and have always supported me. Thank you for always making me feel welcome and always available for a call or an unplanned trip somewhere! Lastly, thank you to my college friends from Grand Canyon University who had stand by me despite all failures and wins.
