We had the good fortune of connecting with Tori Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tori, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I feel that there is nothing more important to running your own business than hard work and hustle. Every successful business has an owner that is willing to do anything to succeed. They are willing to do anything from staying up all night doing paperwork to scrubbing the business floor on their hands and knees. Running your own business is an around the clock job, but it is also extremely rewarding to see the benefits of your hard work and determination. Another factor that plays an extremely important role is the way you treat your customers. Your customers determine whether your business will fail or succeed. I believe that you should treat your customers just like you treat your closest friends and family and be willing to do anything to meet their needs. We strive to make every Studio 223 customer leave happier than when they walked in. A happy customer is your biggest cheerleader and if they enjoy their experience they will share your business with others.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Studio 223 is the cutest little store and do-it-yourself workshop located in downtown Gilbert. We sell handmade products from small, local businesses. We love the opportunity to support local makers and give them a year-round, boutique style shop where they can sell their items. It is so fun to see what our vendors create to sell in the store and then watch the excitement of customers when they find the perfect gift or item for their home. We also run a DIY workshop and have monthly classes that our customers attend. They can learn anything from cookie decorating to chunky blanket making. It is so rewarding to see our customers create their projects from start to finish and learn a new skill. We also offer private parties for kids and adults. Our customers celebrate birthdays, baby showers, bachelorette parties, and team building all in our studio. There are a lot of moving parts to running this type of business and it seems overwhelming at times, but for me, if I break it down into smaller tasks and work my way through the list, somehow it always works out.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love downtown Gilbert! I would take them to Liberty Market or Joyride Taco for lunch on the patio and then maybe do some shopping at the San Tan Mall. Another good option in downtown Gilbert is watching a show at the Hale Theatre. While they were here a hike would be a must and a drive to The Boulders area in Cave Creek/Carefree would be on the list. Ice skating, golf and a day at Saguaro or Canyon Lake would also be on the agenda.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout out and thank my family. When I told my husband and my three boys that I wanted to buy a small business I think they thought I was a little crazy but they have all been so supportive! They are each an integral part of the success of our business. My family cuts and sands the wood needed for our signs, they help paint signs and work in the store when needed. My husband is always willing to help with whatever is needed. Studio 223 is definitely a family business and I couldn’t do it without their support.
