We had the good fortune of connecting with Torrence Watkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Torrence, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
We have been serving the Laveen community for over 14 years. Over the years we have sponsored sports teams, have had vision screenings at the elementary schools, and given free exams and glasses to Phoenix Rescue Missions. Not that is impossible to help the world but I wish more people, companies and businesses would focus on their community. Just this year we were able to give two $10,000 scholarships to our Laveen High Schools. The scholarship will be for four years and the recipients are so deserving. Our most impactful endeavor is that we will have an anti-dyslexia program for the Laveen School District starting this fall. This program will help many of the underachieving students gain confidence in their learning capabilities and self-esteem. Approximately 15-20% of grammar school age children can benefit from vision therapy. I was elected to the School Board of Laveen last year and it allows me an opportunity to give more to my community.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have been an optometrist for 20 years now. I truly love my profession and enjoy the impact I can have on my community. I was the first 4 year college graduate in my family let alone becoming a doctor. Yes! The road was challenging at times but if you’re going to bet you have to bet on yourself. I learned early on the relationships you create with your family, community, peers, employees, and patients are so invaluable. What has helped me to achieve success has been a willingness to make my brand about patient outcomes and satisfaction. I have been blessed with an amazing staff…many of which have been with me when we opened our doors in Laveen in 2007. I am one of a handful of Optometrist in the country that own a Lasik Facility. To be a minority, I am honored to have the privilege to allow younger minorities see the impact we can have in this world.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Locally to eat would be Mimi Forno’s (Italian Restaurant), For the Kids: SkyZone in Laveen Hike: South Mountain Haircut: Z’Ques in Laveen
Sportsbar: Native’s in Laveen

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There has been a number of special people in my life…First and foremost I have to mention my Mother. She raised me as a single parent and gave me all the wisdom and support that I needed to become a doctor. She moved us out of the inner city when I was a toddler I grew up in a loving community and went to college with people that always had my best interest. Another person that will always be special to me is Dr. Stephen Cohen of Scottsdale AZ. Dr. Cohen has been my mentor and dear friend in optometry since 1995. He helped me get into optometry school and has always seen the value I had as a young man.
