We had the good fortune of connecting with Troy Page and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Troy, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
I’m a dad to two beautiful girls – Izze is 5 and Kenzie is 3 – and I think one of the most important things I’ve done for them hopefully is to continue showing up as myself and not letting who I am inside fade with all of the challenges and hardships of life. Writing songs is my therapy. And my girls get to watch me every single day sitting at the piano pouring my heart into writing songs that somehow reflect back to me in a way that makes me feel whole and complete. One of my main goals as a father is knowing my girls on a deep soul level – discovering how they’re wired and what they’re each passionate about and what makes them truly come alive – and then encourage them to pursue that relentlessly regardless of if it can become a full time job or career. I want them to do what they love – bottom line – and then they’ll figure out how to pay the bills. Not the other way around.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a singer/songwriter/multi-
One my songs, STAY, has received quite a bit of positive feedback – and I’m so grateful that people are resonating with the message behind it: the idea that life is hard – but whenever we experience anger/sadness/disappointment, we have a choice to sit with it and let it be our teacher, which will ultimately help us become better versions of ourselves – so in turn we’ll then be able to give the best version of ourselves to the people we love, those who are closest to us – and the world.
I’ll be releasing a 3 song EP, Shadowlands, over a few months starting at the end of April 2022 – and I can’t wait for people to hear these songs.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Whenever friends come visit me in West Michigan, there are definitely some go-to spots that we need to check out. For breakfast, it’s Wolfgang’s in Eastown, hands down, the best. For Dinner, I’m biased from my time at Hope College in Holland, MI – but New Holland Brewing is a must, in my opinion!
Here are also a few amazing concert venues in Grand Rapids – I got to play at 20 Monroe Live – and one day soon I hope to play at Van Andel Arena across the street
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So much of who I am today and where I’m at is thanks to certain people who have encouraged me, mentored me, challenged me – and I’m forever grateful for them and their impact.
To name a couple of them, first, my lovely wife, Haley, who has walked with me throughout life’s ups and downs and constantly encouraged me to be myself and do what I love which is writing songs and sharing them with people who can hopefully connect with them and see themselves in the story.
Also, my good friend and mentor, Delwin Eiland – he believed in me even before I believed in myself. And continues to speak words of encouragement and challenge me to keep getting better.
And lastly, to Dermot Kennedy, who invited me to open for him while he was on tour and stopped by Grand Rapids, MI – allowing me to introduce my songs to 2,500 new friends! I fell back in love with sharing my songs with other people live and it’s been a gift to get to hear everyone’s stories of how much these songs have meant to them.
