We had the good fortune of connecting with Urban Lens Photography June van der Walt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Urban Lens Photography, what do you attribute your success to?
For me, doing what I love every day makes my job a success. Life is all about celebrating love in its loudest form—making each person feel seen, heard, and valued. So I truly invest in my clients and connect with couples who aren’t afraid of showing me who they truly are during a shoot together, and want to prioritise how it FELT. It instantly shows emotion in my photography what I think people love and people connect with that.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It’s been a whirlwind of years, filled with experiences that shaped me into the artist I am today. I believe what sets me apart is my dedication to capturing not just moments, but connections – those raw, authentic emotions that make each story unique.
Obviously there’s been plenty of challenges along the way. Especially in a world where comparison is just a click away, it’s easy to doubt yourself, to wonder if your work is good enough. But hey, every stumble taught me something valuable. I learned to embrace the journey, to keep pushing forward even when things got tough. And you know what? It was worth it.
So as a photographer I stoped focusing on others and started focusing on myself and to let clients know its all all about YOU. Your story, your love, your connection – that’s what inspires me. I want to capture the essence of who you are, the moments that make your heart skip a beat. Because in the end, it’s not just about the photos; it’s about the memories we create together.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So first stop definitely Sossusvlei in Namibia. Trust me, it’s like stepping into a postcard with those towering red dunes and vast desert landscapes. We’d be snapping pics left and right because you can’t miss the chance for some epic shots in a place like that.
After we’ve had our fill of the Namib desert, it’s off to Spitzkoppe for us, another gem in Namibia. Picture this: giant granite peaks rising up out of the desert, creating some seriously jaw-dropping scenery. It’s the perfect spot for some hiking, stargazing, and just soaking in the beauty of nature.
And of course, we can’t forget about Swakopmund. This coastal town is where the desert meets the sea, and it’s got a charm all its own and the best pizza place in Town.
Overall, Namibia is just bursting with incredible places to see and experience, and I’d want my bestie to soak it all in with me. Plus, with each new spot we hit, you can bet we’ll be snapping away, capturing memories to last a lifetime.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely! First and foremost, I’ve got to give a massive shoutout to my family. I mean, I wouldn’t be here chasing my dreams if it wasn’t for their unwavering support since day one. I started photography at a very young age and I still remember when my dad bought me my first camera? And then there’s my amazing husband, who’s been an absolute rockstar throughout this journey. He’s always there, lending a hand, cheering me on, and just being the best partner I could ask for.
But I think the most important people of them all are my clients. They’re the ones who trust me to capture those precious moments in their lives, and without their belief in my work, I wouldn’t be here doing what I love. So, to each and every one of them, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You guys are the real MVPs, and I’m forever grateful for the opportunity to be a part of your most delicate memories.
