We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Zanis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I am so much more than just your standard physical therapist. I am doctor of human movement. I specialize in holistic health, performance, and vitality.
The concentric rings of the tree trunk in my Rooted in MVMNT logo represent growth and expansion, but not just at the physical level of getting stronger and becoming a better human mover. More importantly, they represent the evolution of who we are as individuals and the growth and development of our human experience. This is how we cultivate the life-force energy that reduces our sensitivity to pain, fuels our vitality, and provides the confidence on our mind and body to achieve our goals.
At Rooted in MVMNT, we have the mission to challenge the foundations on which our medical education was built and create an awareness of new ways of working with the human mind and body.
My superpowers are pattern recognition and connection. In my world these highlight the pursuit of clinical mastery and I have the unique ability to visualize patterns in the mind and body that lead to dysfunction, compensation, and pain, and then establish a trusting connection that cultivates the confidence necessary for long term success.
What should our readers know about your business?
The first thing I want to say is that I want each and every one of you reading this to get out of your own way.
Because there is progress, there is a better future for us in this industry
There is a better lifestyle for you and YOU are the only one blocking it.I know this because I blocked my own progress for years.
I told myself stories of why I wasn’t good enough, not athletic enough, not capable of achieving greatness, abundance, and glory.
I lived in a state of scarcity. I always played small and wouldn’t take risks. I was afraid of stepping into the spotlight and being seen.
Then I had this moment in Malta. It was the very first location, the very first opportunity, the very first trip I had with our Olympic teams.
There I was with my physical therapy table set up in the olympic village surrounded by more that 60 nations competing at the highest level of sport. I was focused, working with Team USA athletes, talking with them, building connection, developing trust, and using my innate pattern recognition skills to decipher to puzzle that is human movement. I was playing with movement and living out my purpose showing our athletes that they were in control of their own bodies. They had the power to eliminate their own pain and empower their performance.
That’s when I noticed that people were attracted to me because there was something different about me and they way I did things, and this completely shifted my trajectory.
As the confidence in my athletes grew, so did the confidence in myself. I harnessed the power of this confidence to end a toxic relationship and open up my own small practice in the back of a gym because I believed I was destined for something bigger. I was meant to have a larger impact in this world. I took authority over my own life and placed myself on a new path.
And I believe that this is possible for you too. YOU can change your trajectory, as well. Now, I know, his is scary! Just like pain and injury, stepping into uncertainty always is. What you need is a guide. You need someone that you can trust who has already been there, who knows that this is going to be ok.
And I am here to tell you that this is me.
You can fix your own body and I can show you the way. Because when you do this, it removes the pressure, the pressure that you are dependent on someone else to fix you, and the pressure that something even needs to be fixed in the first place.
It gives you freedom of thought, freedom of process, freedom to see the person in front of you for who you truly are and connect with the person in the mirror.
And there is a specific way that we go through this. It all starts with communication. Then, once we’ve established trust, we open up the door to have a conversation about pain….a conversation that re-establishes confidence in your body, snuffing out fear with courage.
Then, and only then, do we begin to look at your movement. Active, engaged, collaborative learning and education are the central pillars to every interaction. Lastly, we finally create a plan so this becomes a long term solution.
As that happens, we aren’t just sending you out hoping to never see you again. You will have a community of people around you that believe in you and support you and trust you to continue transforming your own life because YOU have given them the tools to be successful.
That’s what we are doing here. We are changing peoples lives, from olympic and professional athletes to the highest branches of our nation’s military including navy special warfare, and everyone in between. We are shifting their trajectory just as I have shifted my own because they believe in themselves. At Rooted in MVMNT, we pride ourselves in helping athletes and providers build trust and confidence in their bodies and practices through the 5 pillars of movement, vitality, mindset, nutrition, and training.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If it was one of my friends, they would want to explore and adventure. So, I would provide them all of the opportunities to try new food, get into the outdoors, and activate their soul with the best Arizona has to offer.
As a Pennsylvania native, I have spent the last 8 years in Phoenix exploring all of the best restaurants. There are way too many to pick, but being from the backwoods of PA, I am truly a meat and potatoes guy at heart. Therefore, I really enjoy Starlight BBQ , all you can eat pork shoulder tacos at The Mission, and a classic bone in ribeye from Steak 44. I am also a busy guy who is on the go constantly, and The Chestnut at 44th street and Osborne is my all time favorite for a delicious and healthy lunch.
Now, for the adventure! I grew up hunting, fishing, camping and shooting guns in Pennsylvania, so some of my favorite places to explore in Arizona are all outside. I love driving up to Sedona for a long weekend to hike (the west fork trail is one of my favorites) and jump in the creek for a quick swim to escape the heat. We would also spend a lot of time up at Ben Avery Shooting facility dusting clays with a shotgun at the sporting clays course and flinging arrows into some 3D targets.
We would also make sure to get in a few yoga classes at The Madison with Bonnie Love, attend a breath-work ceremony with Kseniya Bublikova at Abundance Space, and get in some much needed recovery utilizing the compression, red light, sauna, and cold plunge therapies at Optimyze.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My biggest shout out goes to my partner and greatest support system, Kendall Merritt, owner of Soul Saturations. She is my greatest muse and the energetic life-force behind my creativity. Kendall is the one person who continually pushes and challenges me to work through self-limiting beliefs and achieve my greatest potential, the purpose I was placed on this earth to fulfill.
