We had the good fortune of connecting with Ursula Sabia Sukinik and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ursula, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
The childbirth experience is a significant event of great importance. It is a pivotal experience that forever shapes the individuals involved. It affects the health and well-being of the whole family (World Health Organization, 2005) and their relationships with their family, work, society, and future childbearing experiences. Each birth experience has the possibility of shaping two or more lives with compounding effects. When a family has choices and can feel free to make requests for their needs, they have fewer unnecessary interventions and better outcomes. The news is full of stories demonstrating how labor and delivery can be risky to infants and their parents. Doulas ease this process in multiple ways.
Doula support is shown to reduce cesarean sections, minimize premature labor, and prevent low infant birth weight. By decreasing cesareans mothers and infants have better outcomes. Doula support also results in decreased epidural use during delivery, increased rates of breastfeeding, and the use of safety precautions for the child. Studies show the use of doulas promotes education, increases birth satisfaction, reduces recovery times, and helps to prevent mental health challenges,
Birth You Desire® was founded in 1999 to provide families with high-quality, non-judgmental birth-related services starting with fertility and continuing through pregnancy, birth, and the first year of recovery, to make sure that each family can speak up about their needs and get the support they deserve.
Birth You Desire® is known for supporting every client as an individual with respectful, non-biased care. No matter what our client’s needs are or their requests, we can help them have a positive experience. With this mission in mind, we have expanded and now support the Phoenix Metropolitan area and the Washington DC Metropolitan area. Our mobile, award-winning doulas provide in-person services regionally. Additionally, Birth You Desire® uses technology to offer virtual services worldwide. Birth You Desire® has attended over 200 births using video conferencing across the U.S. and internationally with clients in Japan, England, Spain, Bahrain, Germany, and Honduras.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am Ursula Sabia Sukinik. I am a woman, a wife, a mother, a doula, a caregiver, and a business owner. I have helped more than 4,000 families navigate their pregnancy, birth, and recovery. One day, a friend asked me to attend the birth of her second baby for extra support. At the birth, I “caught the baby” and caught a passion for helping serve families during a pivotal moment in their lives was “born”.
In that instant, I understood how one moment could change a whole family’s trajectory. I realized that I could change the world—for the better—one birth at a time, and I studied to become a doula. I founded Birth You Desire® in 1999. Since then, I have personally attended over 1,500 births and my team has helped more than 6,000 families have the births they desired. The Birth You Desire® team of 23 doulas—with more than 250 years of collective expertise in all types of birth (low risk to high risk, hospital, birth centers, and home)—supports clients from conception through recovery.
This genuinely collaborative practice has the most experienced doulas and team in the U.S. With a Birth You Desire® doula at your side, you are in the best hands possible. We have experience in all birth locations (hospital, birth center, and home) and all scenarios from high-risk to low-risk.
As a Birth You Desire® client, you’ll experience our mission to help YOU have the best experience as YOU define it. To help you to find YOUR voice. Help YOU to be heard and treated with respect. Help YOU to have the Birth YOU DESIRE.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
An ideal day for me starts with coffee and breakfast outside with my husband and pup. Followed by a hike at McDowell Mountain Preserve or Phoenix Mountain Preserve. Followed by a matcha latte at Press. Then an afternoon of exploring the Scottsdale shops, exhibits, or displays while pondering which of the local independent restaurants we would like to eat at. Then close the night off with music at our fire pit. When family and friends visit some of our favorite activities include the Desert Botanical Gardens, hiking, UTVing in Cave Creek, and relaxing outside.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be where I am without my amazing husband, David. He has supported me from the very beginning. His trust and support allowed us to raise our family despite the late nights and 48-hour shifts and made my growth as well as Birth You Desire’s® growth possible. I would also like to recognize the Birth You Desire® team. Together we are stronger. We could not be where we are today without your dedication and passion to make birth better. Finally, thanks to our clients and friends who have trusted us with their lives and dreams. Thank you. Without everyone’s belief in us, we would not be where we are today.
